I don't know if this post is allowed here or not. I've read the rules, maybe this is OK, maybe it isn't, but I'm going to take a chance.
This story was in my local paper. It is about a single mother working to take care of her son, who has muscular dystrophy. He is about to undergo surgery to permanently insert two titanium rods in his spine from his tail-bone to his shoulders. She is "lucky" that she has some health care, but it won't cover all the expenses related to his surgery. The mother has been working her ass off trying to raise money to take care of her son, and well, I think the story tells itself.
I read this story Sunday evening, and I ended up staying up pretty late Sunday night reading about muscular dystrophy. Sadly, the best Zak can hope for is maybe to live to his early thirties. As a new father of (knock on wood) healthy twin baby girls, I can't imagine how crushed I would be if I had to take the news that Zak and his mother have taken.
Certainly, the world is full of people who have worse stories to tell. Certainly, many of those people are suffering directly because of the actions of our country. Certainly, anything I can do to help Zak and Megan is just a drop in a gigantic sucking bucket. But despite all that, here is one boy and one mother that I can directly do something to help. I've given financially what I can, and I'm hoping that posting here might help them a little more.
So, yes, this is a request for a donation. But it isn't for me, it is for two people who I don't know from jack, except that I want only the best for them. I can't imagine how f*cking hard this woman's life has been; for many of the injustices we rail against. The wealthiest country in the world, and this woman has to go begging strangers to help her pay for medical care.
I know, I KNOW, that if we posted every cry for help in the world on DU, we would be drowning in cries. But if you have the time to read their story, please do. And if you have the ability to make even a small donation on their
on their website, please do. And if this post gets even one more dollar to her before it gets deleted, or banned, or whatever, then I'm glad I posted it.
