The Magna Carta
this is almost 1000 years. You know what amazes me, that is where the right to speedy trials, and to face your accusers come from.

Just reading it while preparing some class material...

1. Yep. The nobles against King John.
I don't have it in front of me, but was it at all concerned with the working people?

2. To an extent . . .
For yeomen, at least. Merchants, of course - freemen in general. Not so much for the bottom tier of society.

nadinb . . . do you use the Declaration of Arbroath in your classes? I love that one.

3. The working people weren't really recognized as people yet at the time
Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 11:55 PM by Posteritatis
The precedents - and around here I should probably apologize for using the term - trickled down over the centuries, as each group got used to a set of new rights, got pressured by those 'below' them for something similar, and pressured those 'above' them for more freedoms in turn.

OP's link has the full text.

6. Yah. I was thinking how little they got out of the Big Charter
And how they made it work for them over time. Which I will try to use as comfort over the half-assed piss poor legislation that's been oozing out of Congress.
