Are DUers watching that school bus crash in Missouri
Two school buses and a huge tractor trailer and an SUV. At least two persons are dead so far.

9. DOn't know but if I was a betting woman
I'd bet the SUV tried to overtake the buses and the rig.

4. Unbelievable isn't it
between the bus and the big rig. I mean one bus is on the rig.
School bus ran over the rig's trailer and took out the SUV. Two dead - 50 hurt.

Why don't school buses have seat belts?

10. I was told it was so the kids could get out in case of a fire. Lots of little ones can't
undo the buckles and would be trapped.

Not that being thrown around like a rag doll at 50mph is a good thing either. :( My prayers and vibes go out to everyone involved.

15. Because for the most part
School buses are one of the safest vehicles on the road. They have a construction style that have safety measures built in. And when you have a crash and the bus must be evacuated in a speedy fashion belts are not appropriate.Bus evacuations are practiced in every district its universal. there are some buses that are seat belt equipped they are usually the smaller van type buses or they are wheel chair accessible buses(The chairs must be strapped down). In any respect the bus drivers carry a belt cutter that is mounted in plain view for emergencies. But on larger buses there can be as many as sixty kids on a school bus. In an emergency situation for evacuation this would consume more time cutting sixty sets of belts. And due to most districts with budget cuts there are not many bus attendants on regular routes, they are mostly placed on high priority routes.

Edited on Thu Aug-05-10 12:23 PM by rocktivity
I think you should need a special license to drive them. You need one for tractor trailers and school buses.

:(

13. One report I heard out of St. Louis said
that the SUV was westbound and the buses and tractor were eastbound. I know first reports are sometimes erroneous.

16. Just heard it's actually a pick-up truck
instead of an SUV. And the deceased are not students. Hope that turns out to be correct!

17. Correction......
Now they are saying one student, a girl, was killed. And the driver of the pick-up truck was killed.

19. Maybe they're referring to the SUV or pickup truck driver.
Whoever was in that vehicle had no chance, I'm afraid.

22. That's what it looks like to me, but I can't be sure.
It definitely has different wheels than the bus or the semi--more like chrome rims, from what I can see.

24. The driver of the gray tractor (trailer truck without trailer)
is alive, taken to hospital. He was stopped for highway construction. A pick-up truck rear-ended him. Then the first school bus, following behind the pick-up truck, was swerving into the passing lane to avoid another vehicle on the shoulder. The bus driver was busy checking her rearview mirrors as the two trucks collided. When she looked in front of her, it was too late to react and she rear-ended the pick-up truck. Then the second bus collided with the first bus.

As of now, they are saying the driver of the pick-up truck (second vehicle) was killed. I've heard conflicting reports about the other fatality--whether it was a student or the driver of the second bus.
