I would like to propose a forum for the military and military families of DU
Okay here goes...

Mission Statement: This forum would be a safe place for DU members that are either military or have loved ones overseas to vent and comfort one another. As the years go by this war is taking a great mental toll on those of us with a horse in the race. Tours keep getting longer and more frequent. May this forum be a place to lean on each other when things get tough and share some stories to get through the day.

(if anyone else has ideas or can put that more eloquently, please do)

1. It's such a great idea that we actually already tried it!
Unfortunately, once the group was formed, participation declined until it was disbanded.

But timing is everything and maybe there is more interest now? If so, I'm interested! Thanks! :hi:

It could also be a place to dispute some myths about the military and it's members.

I cannot confirm or deny the existence of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster.

10. I don't have family in military, but think this is a good idea.
Timing is important. If it was tried before and was disbanded, perhaps trying it again would be a good idea.

13. I would appreciate the support, though
I have had immense support from the general DU public during my Marine son's THREE tours (on his third now) to Iraq. The people here will never know how much their kind words have meant to me.
Having a son or daughter as part of this fiasco is incredibly difficult.
My DU community has kept me sane. Or. Kinda sane.
I guess not as crazy as I should be considering the circumstances.
(my son, a diehard liberal, is very aware of the support given here. He is extremely grateful.)

26. I don't think the military should exalt itself above the rest of us
It is supported by our taxes. It carries out our policies. We are responsible for what the military does, every last citizen, since this country's elected representatives are the ones that send the military wherever they go.

The temptation is great, but it's not right to say that military concerns are somehow separated so that they are "special" and the rest of us are supposed to be excluded from a little clique because of the never having been in the military (let alone merely not being related to someone in the military).

We'd all be there if the time and place were right (barring the differences for women, of course). Separating the military out leads to that danger that the rest of us are muzzled or shut out of the decision making (it is the right wing's constant mantra, in fact).

28. It's not about seperating
It's about having a forum where active military and the families of the men and women over there can go to talk. No different then any of the other forums. No one is talking about excluding anyone who isn't military or a family member.

It would be wonderful to have a place for those of us with loved ones overseas to talk about our experiences with one another.
