Think for Yourself
{1} Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling is, in my opinion, the most important progressive action taken by a ranking member in the federal system in many years. His ruling is a prime example of the power of logic, rational thought, and reasoning that makes the federal courts – with the sad exception of the US Supreme Court -- the best hope for those who believe in the US Constitution.

{2} I bought a copy of the May 31, 1963 edition of Life magazine yesterday. The feature story is “Watch the Black Muslims.” Considering it was published six months before Malcolm X was “suspended,” it makes for a fascinating read.

The magazine also has a curious article “The Royal Reformer of Iran,” about the Shah. It reminded me of when, in 1980, Dick Gregory said that the United States could never understand the Islamic world, until it grasped the significance of Malcolm.

{3} I just got three nice photos of Smokin' Joe and Marvis in the mail. They are all autographed by both father and son. They will look great in my son's gym.

{4} Jane Goodall's book “Reason for Hope” is worth reading. Since her days as a student of Louis and Mary Leakey, she has lived a remarkable life. She is evidence that gentleness is indeed strength.

{5} Coaching girls' JV basketball in the area “summer league” is a blast; however, I anticipate that the gym will be very hot and humid during this evening's double-header.

{6} I feel pretty good about I presentation that I did for about sixty people in a local courtroom earlier this week.

{7} Register & Vote. Think for yourself. Have the courage of your convictions.

1. I spent the weekend looking over Life and Look magazines from the 60's and early 70's
The August 1969 issue of Look featured Woodstock, Apollo 11 and the then unsolved Sharon Tate murders.

One issue from 1970 featured home computers ($8500) and one stated predictions by prominent scientists that by 1985 carbon dioxide emissions would change the Earth's temperature.

fascinating stuff

2. When I look at those old Life magazines I'm struck by the
life of luxury enjoyed by the rich who were taxed at 90%. Somehow they enjoyed themselves despite the taxes.

3. 1) Of all the causes of astronaut insanity, having a fly caught in your space helmet...
is probably in the top three.

2) I'm glad that douche Mark Cuban didn't obtain ownership of the Texas Rangers.

3) As great as he was, even Hunter Thompson started to repeat material toward the end.

4) It's hot. Damned hot. Reminds me of the Summer of 1980.

5) When people say that the desert is lifeless it just makes me want to grab them by the collar and drive them out to the desert where the circus is. Then I'd point out to them the many forms of zebra and clown life.

6) The overturning of Prop. 8 is wonderful, not only because it's the just and right thing, but also because it's always good to see the haters' heads exploding.

7) I think I'll have a turkey sandwich for lunch.

Got these from a recent candidate for county commissioner here in Cupcake Land. Everybody runs U, so he didn't succeed; they picked the dinosaur who was talking about growth and expansion instead :-(
