The Advocate: NO Change (Obama reaffirms opposition to same-gender marriage on historic day)
...And for the Obama administration, the inconsistencies abound and only stand to grow with time. Let’s remember that Axelrod said the president “opposes” marriage equality, which is actually one step further than just reminding people that he supports civil unions.

Here’s a sampling of their dilemma: Explain how the President denounces Proposition 8 but doesn’t favor the marriages that would be allowed if it were overturned; why he believes DOMA should be repealed and supports full federal benefits for same-sex couples but he doesn't support the marriages that will afford that type of federal recognition.

And then there’s the idea that the president continues to “promote equality for LGBT Americans” even as he opposes same-sex marriage and supports a separate-but-unequal alternative.

It makes one wonder if it’s possible to tie yourself in so many knots that you eventually lose the capacity to loosen the strings.

Obama backers surely think I am unfairly flogging the president by now, but like it or not, the dissonance will only deepen if the administration digs its heels in over the next couple years. This debate is not diminishing but rather it is growing in stature. Surely, there will be bumps along the road for equality advocates, but if this case reaches the Supreme Court, the White House will face a conundrum of epic proportions.

1. K&R. There is nothing unfair in what you wrote. Obama wants gay support, but at zero political cost
to himself. Just like he wants the support of women, union members, etc., whom he then can't throw under the bus and drive over fast enough speeding away from them after the election.

Don't you just love the Third Way?
Liberal rhetoric, conservative action.
That's what they're about. All of them.

6. How did this guy get elected?
By saying he doesn't support something that he supported when he ran for the job?

Is this some kind of game?
"Tell me what I said and what it meant?"

It sounds like that old Richard Pryor joke about the boys who were running in the house when the lamp got broke and then dad came home and asked how it happened and the little boy said, "okay, so okay, here's how it happened, okay?, so I was running, okay?, but I wasn't really running, okay?"

9. "Tell me what I said and what it meant?"
Deja Vu

Remember that the (D)emocratic party is now the party that *arrests* Doctors and Nurses that want to *talk* about single payer at a *hearing* and remember that whatever O said when he was running was simply to "win". Anyone can change their mind...

15. And he could have said nothing, like he did when other states approved equality.
But noooooooo out come the statements which just picked a scab on what was otherwise a joyous day for us. Whatever, Mr. President.

12. Obama is going to be an ironic chuckle in the history books
in terms of civil rights. When there are elected gay officials serving openly and being elected to high office, let's face it, kids will laugh out loud reading about the first black President, product of a previously illegal union, opposing equality. The day America elects the fist gay President, Obama will look like Jefferson Davis. And face it, that is funny stuff, comedy gold.
