Shepard Fairey mural in San Diego gay neighborhood vandalized
Shepard Fairey is the artist who created the famous Obama poster. He was commissioned to do a mural by the San Diego Art Museum and now some "tagger" has fucked it all up.

1. Oh, no! I'm very familiar with that art.

Oh, that's so wrong! I hope that they can repair it relatively easily.

The perpetrators must be being eaten up inside by their irrational hatred.

3. Have to have a better look at the damage and see if it matches known any known taggers
Most of the taggers I see are amateurs these days. No style, no art, and no ideology.

11. Thanks for putting that in such a positive light
I might have called them something like young wannabe hooligans who need a swift kick in the butt.

10. The art seems to allude to John Carpenter's movie "They Live"
Hatred of art? Hatred of the color red?

7. This is GREAT!! For all of you who don't know Shepard, He got his start tagging local billboards.
Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 01:24 PM by slampoet
The first billboard tag that made him famous was Fairey covering up the image of Providence mayoral candidate Buddy Cianci with a HUGE image of Andre the Giant. He also broke three fingers off the side of the billboard and left just the middle finger and he changed the text to say "Andre never stopped caring about Providence....Cow Cow Cow"

In all Shepard Fairey ended up vandalizing three billboards this way.

Shepard Fairey got into trouble with the authorities but the Cianci campaign didn't want the publicity since they were winning, so Shep didn't get a big punishment and Cianci got to run on an Anti-graffiti campaign.

Fast forward to three years later just as Shepard Fairey is graduating from RISD. Right next to RISD there was a billboard (near 2 steeple st) that had an advertisement for the local zoo's exhibit of the Naked Mole Rat. There was a picture of the ugly creature and the slogan "As if being a rat weren't bad enough."

Shepard Fairey pasted a big "Andre-style" sticker of Mayor Buddy Cianci over the Naked Mole Rat's face and just left the saying AS IF BEING A RAT WEREN'T BAD ENOUGH.

So if anyone thinks this is awful they really have no one to blame except Shepard Fairey's Karma. This is more of a tribute to him than many of you realize.

13. you have a problem with 'vandalizing' political posters?
I think those are BEYOND okay. Art, is a whole other story. But bullshit political fliers deserve it.

12. If it's tagging over "art," it's considered vandalism. If it's tagging over graffiti,
no one cares. :(
