3. We need to extend them for a few years till we are out of this recession.
It's a sad fact but they do a chunk of the spending in this country, I think I read it may be 30% of individual consumption. Their spending brought us out of the recession and can put us back in it and if you think it is bad now then imagine how bad it could be.

We should do a deal with the repubs to extend all the cuts for 1 or 2 years then keep just the $250k or under. But really eventually everyones taxes will need to go up because we could tax the $250k plus earners 100% in addition to current taxes and we would still be in deficit.

8. Sadly, paying down our deficit won't benefit us much in the short term.
Paying it down is meant to keep down future rates to prevent the bond vigilantes from attacking our bonds. But people are still flocking to treasuries in times of stress and rates are ridiculously low.

The dilemma is that we need for someone to spend money to keep this economy running.

And personally I think the least a person should pay in federal taxes is zero. I don't think taxing one segment to give another segment spending money should be a function of the government unless they are at subsistence levels and qualify for welfare.

16. ok, why don't we just eliminate tax shelters and loopholes?
the other 98% of americans don't get shelters and loopholes. let's at least level the playing field. oh, and the wealthy sure have been putting their money to work over the last year to get us out of this recession . . . NOT. the only trickle down most of the old rich white men of america know is that which trickles down their leg when they are too old or too drunk to aim well.

19. Yup I agree. We should all just get a standard deduction on top of a progressive taxand that is it.
If we got rid of the mortgage deduction that would bring down housing costs and make it more affordable for future buyers.

22. if you are referring to the mortgage tax/interest deduction,
i don't know how many this applies to but i was not able to take mine last year. it's not really an extra deduction if it does not come off the top. it only applies if you have paid out more in medical and mortgage and charity than the standard deduction. if i had no additional medical or housing expenses, i would still get the standard deduction. as it is, i get no benefit from owning my house and, when i had individual health insurance, i got no tax break from that either, as people in group policies did. my premiums were after tax.

i agree with a progressive tax code but i don't see how the rich are paying their fair share. i do see how i am.

24. How well are they working?
It's been thirty years since Reagan first brought in this supply side shit, and the economy has done nothing but revert to the Robber Baron Era.

When does the promise come true? Where are all the jobs that were promised? Oh, right. In China and India.
