The Falwell Thread on the Home Page is Offensive |

I'm sorry that he wasn't a good guy, but there's no call to speak ill of the dead minutes after his passing on the front page of DU. That's not right.

That little girl was sad because her father lost. She can't help who her father is.

77. Actually, it's victimizing a child |
|
whose father didn't have the common sense to remove her from a situation that was upsetting to her.
The photo has nothing to do with the subject at hand.
Just a question -- how would YOU feel if that was your daughter, your niece, your sister?
We are no better than they are when we use the same tactics. The young girl in question doesn't deserve this.

I suppose that picture might be unflattering, but victimizing? Just what is your rationale to throw around a word that that? Victim of what? Has it been photoshop to misrepresent how she looked? Is it inaccurate that she was sad or at least made a sad face for a camera? There is no shame in crying. If Rick Santorum was my dad I would cry to. Having one's picture taken when one is ON A STAGE IN A PUBLIC FORUM doesn't make one a victim. It's a funny picture, but I don't think it reflects negatively on the child. Kids cry. There are literally millions of children in this world that truly are victims. I humbly suggest that you channel some of your self righteousness to a more worthy cause.

128. The child is obviously a minor |
|
To continue posting a photograph that has nothing to do with the subject at hand and shows the young lady obviously upset is victimization, whether or not you agree. The posters here went into white-heat meltdown over Rush Limbaugh's comments on a thirteen-year-old Chelsea Clinton, for instance. How is THIS different?
>Having one's picture taken when one is ON A STAGE IN A PUBLIC FORUM doesn't make one a victim.<
Did she have a choice about being there? Considering the fact she was there because her parents obviously required it didn't give many choices, did it?
I don't think the photo's funny at all. I think it's sad that her parents care more about their political aspirations than about an obviously upset and distraught child.
>I humbly suggest that you channel some of your self righteousness to a more worthy cause.<
I have three words for you: Pot. Kettle. Black.

B) If they are crying, then yes, I am happy they are crying. Those pigfuckers (and I mean that with all due respect for pigs) were close to the great evil and did nothing to stop him. I'm supposed to feel sorry for them? Puhleeze.
Not that I believe anyone close to him is crying over his death, may I reiterate.

Oh, but I guess since the roof over her head and food in her mouth was paid for by her dad's salary as a senator, she was a willing participant in everything he did and deserves to cry.

Finally, someone has shut that vicious gas-bag of hate down. I know some folks believe that it is not decent to speak ill of the dead, but I when a rabid animal dies, it is a cause for celebration.
Yes, there were people who loved him and cared about him, but then every vile person in history has people who loved him.
If he was truly doing "God's will" as he liked to brag, then why is he dead? The answer is "God" really had nothing to do with it. He ate himself to death, his gluttony like his arrogant conceit something he could never control.
Perhaps "God" will get to work on the rest of his "spiritual kindred".

that some of his rhetoric was hurtful. What many here do not seem to get is that these hateful threads will be used for the next 3 days on Faux and will then creep into MSNBC and CNN and will be used to identify mainstream Democrats. I am a gay male..I despised everything this man stood for, but I take no delight in his death, preferring instead to pray that he is shown a better way in the afterlife.

But we're talking about Jerry-Fucking Falwell here, not someone with the remotest bit of respectability. I won't be saying anything bad about him here, though, cuz I already did it on my myspace page and others here can do the work for me.

54. I found Falwell a miserable creature, and while I post some |
|
things about how degrading and miserable he was, I can not, in good faith revel over his death.
I can think of worse people, but most of them are dead as well. I am not saddened by his demise, one iota, just as I wold not shed a tear over the Hitler, Stalin or Mao. He was an evil man, but rather than take a moment to dance in the street, I feel that he missed out on a lot of life because he was driven by hate and bastardized a religion that holds as it's chief tenets, understanding, compassion, patience and love. Maybe, just maybe, before that last heartbeat, he relented and knew how much hatred he fed, and repented, at least for one moment.

60. We will not turn someone into a martyr or hero because he died. |
|
He was a horrible person who used the name of God to influence politics. And now we will have to listen for days on end how wonderful he was. And don't forget the televised funeral service. Look back at some of the horrible things he said about victims in NY after 9-11, etc. Most of what came out of his mouth was not God-pleasing, in my opinion. He mixed politics and religion on a daily basis. I would not want to be him at pearly gates trying to explain what his life stood for. I am not speaking ill of the dead. I am speaking truth and death does not absolve him of scrutiny. He acted like he was God, not like God wants us to act.

God chose to take Jerry from us for a reason. The world is always changing. But for we, ourselves, the change must come from within. This is all for the best.

81. Whoever tries to compare this to the way the Freepers |

reacted to, say, Paul Wellstone's death is completely off the mark. Falwell was a professional hate-monger, cloaking himself as a man of God while giving his followers scapegoats to blame for all of the "ills" of society. He was nothing more than a modern-day Goebbels...

92. Falwell was the one who said regarding 9/11/2001 and within days of the attack: |
|
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen." - Jerry Taliban Falwell
He portrayed the 911 attacks as being the will of an angry God. I will not stop calling him wrong in those actions simply because he is dead. He sought to cash in on terrorism

95. Well this thread was specifically about the thread on the homepage, now edited. |
|
Because I did not think it was appropriate to have Jerry "Fartwell" etc. on the DU home page. I do not disagree with you that he was a bad guy, and we have the right to say so. I just thought it was in very poor taste to have juvenile comments (now removed) at the top of the DU homepage minutes after his death. YMMV.

116. That is for you to determine for yourself. |
|
I was not telling you how you should acknowledge his passing. I think that you are reading too much into people's posts and feel that they are trying to tell you what you should do. You seemed to think that the OP was saying people should be showing reverence for the man. I don't believe that was his point. I believe that he was commenting on the profound amount of hatred coming out of DU (not from your posts, from the posts of others) for Falwell. I was merely pointing out that it is possible to neither celebrate nor mourn his death.
If you feel the need to acknowledge his death in someway, that is of course totally up to you and you should figure that out for yourself.

114. Why not? What's the big prohibition about "speaking ill of the dead" |
|
It's obviously not a universal assumption. Nobody here will post a similar thread if Osama bin Laden ends up dead.
So what is it?
Why shouldn't we speak ill of the dead? We spoke ill of them when they were alive, when it actually mattered to them. So what's the big prohibition. It sounds like uncritical nonsense to me.

133. I posted thsi thread minutes after his death was announced - |
|
At that moment the LBN thread had gotten so many recommends it hit the top of the homepage. The thread was titled Falwell Dead or something, but the post itself was just juvenile insults, something like, I call him Fartwell, or Fuckwell. Whatever it was it was innappropriate for the homepage of DU minutes after the announcement of his death, IMO, and evidently the mods agreed with me because the post was edited for content so it included the actual news story instead of the poster's crude editorial comments. That said, I think everyone should be free to say whatever they like about the man, as he felt free to spew hateful words about US. I just thought, at that moment, that that particular post was in very poor taste for the homepage of DU. I've never seen you around here before but check my journal if you think I am some kind of enabler. I think you'll find we are on the same team. :hi:
