GOP Rep. Comes Clean: We Don’t Need to Bash Gays Because We Have Immigrants!
Posted by Joshua Holland on @ 11:19 am

John Cole caught a nice moment of candor from NY wing-nut Peter King in this Politico story about the GOP remaining more-or-less mum on the Prop H8 ruling:

King, the Long Island congressman, said that in terms of social issues, the raging controversy over the Arizona border laws is providing more than enough ammunition for Republicans in key districts.

“The Arizona immigration law is there, there’s no reason to be raising an issue of gay rights” as a wedge, he said.

King is a bit of a zealot, and I think True Believers often convince themselves that most people are with them, even if they don’t say so — the “silent majority” principle, if you will. That belief can lead to a less-than-effective filter between brain and mouth.

It may be that the emergence of the Tea Parties — the same right-wingers with a some exciting new packaging and lots of media attention — has made people like King less wary of how their statements will be received than they might otherwise be.

Or, maybe he’s just an idiot. Or both. Either way, it’s good to hear them come clean from time to time about how cynically they deploy these kinds of issues.

1. King says the most honest things when he least expects it.

Remember in 2004, when he said something to the effect of the GOP has the votes, and if we don't we got the machines to make sure we get them?

Telling.

2. These right wing idiots still haven't figured it out

Everything they say in public will be heard, and will be posted on the Internet before dinner.

4. lets hope they never do
It's the charming sociopaths that look like pillars of the community, the ones that know to hide what they are, that get you.

3. It's nice to know that the repubs' immigrant bashing has had the effect of
making them less focused on bashing gays to win votes with their base.

I wonder who gets to pick the group that will be the focus of repub bashing each election cycle. Must be an interesting decision-making process. ;) Got to have a wedge issue to distract the voters with. :)

5. Don't worry. They'll raise gay rights as an issue just the same.
