Jerry Falwell was no Mother Teresa
Edited on Tue May-15-07 01:40 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
If the head of the Ku Klux Klan died, would it be OK for people on DU to celebrate or should we show "respect" for the fact that a fellow human being is dead? What is the statute of limitations for when we can express relief, and even joy, that one of the most hateful and bigoted people on this planet -- responsible for the deaths of many due to followers of his "teachings" -- has met his end?

See this man?
http://imgred.com/

His name is Eric Rudolph. He is responsible for killing and injuring people in the name of God. He, and people like him, are the direct product of Mr. Falwell's evangelizing hatred.

We don't have to refrain from expressing the true emotions we all feel right now at the passing of Mr. Falwell. We don't have to be "better than that", because we are already better by default.

13. NO SHIT! Why when some rotten son of a bitch croaks do some
people think that wipes the slate clean, that it makes them entitled to some new-found something, consideration maybe (even if they claim its simply because that person has finally tipped over).

I do not understand the don't speak ill of the dead thing when there wasn't anything kind or complimentary that you could say about them during life.

They're Holier-Than-Thou.

These people weren't around going on at length when Saddam Hussein died. And they're often the first to show up when a sex offender gets caught and say how they'd like to see him die a horrible death. So I'm going to have to assume that many of them were in some way fond of Falwell.

15. Was it because he claimed to be a 'Christian'?
Edited on Tue May-15-07 02:46 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
I don't understand it, either. What was it about Jerry Falwell that people feel the need to show respect for his death? I have a suspicion that it has to do with his alleged "Christianity". These people also identify themselves as Christian, and feel that one of their group is being unnecessarily attacked.

If Osama Bin Laden died, would these same people be hand wringing over all the joyous DU posts? Falwell is responsible for the same type of religious fundamentalist hatred as Bin Laden, the only difference being that of degree.

2. I'm not stopping you Mate
I just can't find any satisfaction in trashing the man right now. However, I believe we should keep his legacy alive because it is the greatest weapon against him and his kind. And you are absolutely right about rudolph.

7. I'm just happy that I don't have to hear from him anymore
I'm not going to celebrate anyone's death, but I am ecstatic that we are not going to be subjected to his hate-mongering anymore. I'm not going to play the revisionist history game and pretend that he was OK after all, but I'm not going to jump up and down either.

8. Mother Teresa was no saint herself. She was a friend of the wealthy and
told the poor to wait for heaven.

She went to bat for rich folks like chuck Keating, but did nothing to change the circumstances of the poor.
