Kershaw deputy fired after imprisoned man's leg broken
By Jody Barr

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - State Law Enforcement Division agents, along with the Attorney General's office are investigating a beating at the Kershaw County Detention Center that sent a handcuffed inmate to the hospital. The beating cost 50 year old Sergeant Oddie Tribble, Jr. his job, according to Kershaw County Sheriff, Steve McCaskill.

The beating happened around 10:45 Thursday night inside the detention center, according to a report filed by Tribble. The beating apparently left the man with a broken leg. The victim, 38 year old Charles Edwin Shelley, spoke with WIS by phone from the detention center Monday. Shelley alleged he was "exchanging words" with Tribble when, "I'm in handcuffs, he tells me to get out of the van and commence to beating me with the pipe he had."

Shelley said he was arrested for an outstanding warrant, driving without a license, and open container.

The beating left Shelley with a broken left leg and several stitches to close a cut in his left leg. Jailers moved Shelley to an isolated cell Monday morning. Shelley alleged he was handcuffed during the beating on the floor of the detention center, and that "COs (corrections officers) were standing in windows watching him beat me." Shelley remained jailed Monday.

1. they should bring criminal charges against the bully
And reprimand all the staff who did not step in. If they filed false reports on it, they should also be fired. Corrections officers need to know they are not above the law.
