How many students are in your child's class this year?
My son teaches 4th grade in Indianapolis. He has been assigned 32 students this year...up 6 from last year. The other 4th grade rooms will be crowded too. Enough for a 5th classroom if the monies were there.

Will the teachers be blamed when achievement test scores fail, even if the number of students in their rooms has increased by 20% or more?

I know! Let's not ask the wealthy to pay any more taxes, let's just trim the budget some more. After all, when Repubs cut education funding, they're just trying to create future Republican voters.

1. I had 39 1st graders back in the 50's--my first year of teaching.

3. Back in the early 60's, the largest class I was in was 42.
But things are very different now.

Half my son's students come from single parent homes. A couple are being raised by grandparents. I don't know what the number is this year, but his last year's class had 7 ESL students.

6. Class size only matters when there are unruly ass-hat kids
During the early school years of Boomers, we often had 40 or more because building schools could not keep up with us:rofl:

But back then, kids feared the wrath of
"Tee-eee-chur"..Today's kids seem to want to provoke a teacher into a situation so their parents can sue the school district.

Odd side note: Our youngest had no more than 12 in his classroom up until high school..He was in a pilot program of G.A.T.E. and had a teacher with a PHD that "followed" the same group of kids from Grade 4 through middle school. She was wonderful.. Those kids made a movie, they wrote a book..their "field trips" were whale watching, trips to the chem lab at UCR (her brother was there), they went to court to watch procedures, they went to Monterey Bay ..
