$57-a-night, everything's a la carte hotel opens in London
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 09:40 AM by marmar
from the Toronto Star:

A Malaysian hotel chain is hoping it can do for the hotel business what Ryanair did for air travel in England.

Tune Hotels is opening a hotel with 75 rooms in London on Westminster Bridge Road, close to many of London’s many attractions from Big Ben, to the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

The tiny rooms will cost about $57 Canadian. What does that get you? A standard room with a comfy bed, a shower and not much else, according to the company’s website. But it is located in central London.

But travelers should know that most of the things that you take for granted at most hotels are extra at the Tunes property. For example, if you want your luggage stored, or have your room cleaned or need a hair dryer – that’s all extra. And if you want towels they’re extra too.

According to the Daily Mail, towels cost $1.63 Canadian each; a hair dryer is $3.27 to use; luggage storage is $3.27; room cleaning is $12.27.

Other add-ons that a traveller will be charged for include toiletries, a room safe, a television package and WIFI. ........(more)

2. Sounds good to me...if you're in London and spend anytime in your hotel room
when you could be seeing so many freaking amazing sights, then you should stay home.

Any tiem other than sleeping, that is.

3. I would jump on that
With electricity, you get a lamp for reading and power for your ipod mini-stereo. Entertainment, sorted. Might have to spring for one towel though...

11. Packing a damp towel for the return trip, I don't know
Other than that, cleaning? Hell, I clean my apartment once every three weeks...

(Hey, can we have Austin Jackson back, BTW? Curtis Granderson sucks.)

5. I would definitely stay there. What do I need the room for other than sleeping, showering and
perhaps snuggling :P

7. I seem to remember a Philip K. Dick short story where everything in
a guy's apartment was coin operated. He had to pay to use the toilet, stove, tv, doors, etc. Guess that's coming true.

8. My wife and I stayed at the Gaylord Opryland resort
for a conference a couple of years ago. On top of the extremely high room rates, they charged $12/day for broadband service. Hell, Motel 6 gives it away. If I stayed in that London hotel, I'd spring for a couple of towels and broadband. Nothing else. I wouldn't be in the hotel much, and British television sucks, pretty much.

9. Some of that stuff *should* be extra-cost: Hair dryers, luggage storage, room safe,
WIFI, etc. A lot of travelers don't use those anyway- so not having to pay for them would be a welcome change.

14. We used to call them "hostels"
You could get "private" rooms at hostels. They consisted of not much more than a door and a bunk. Heck, you could get them without showers and toilets.
