What drug is likeliest to make a person say Obama is like Bush?
Edited on Tue Aug-10-10 11:03 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
I would vote for alcohol.

Weed would make you say Obama is like the black Vulcan on Star Trek: Voyager.

Acid would make you say Obama actually is Bush.

Crack would make you ask whether Obama or Bush knew where to get more crack. (Bush probably would, BTW.)

______

(In reference to the WH press secretary saying that people who compare Obama to Bush need drug testing.)

Again, you are resorting to counter-accusations and ad hominem attacks in an effort to change the subject.

I vote D. and there is a "D" next to my name in the voter registry. Also, I financially support election campaigns of officials who I think do a good job. That makes me a Democrat regardless of what I think about the POTUS. The reason I am a Democrat is because there is no socialist party and the D's represent slightly less scarey collection of interests than the Rs do.

34. Equation isn't the same as comparison
I do not think Obama is much like Bush at all, personally.

But saying he is *like* Bush in some way isn't quite the same thing.

It depends on your perspective... on the distance from the thing.

Obama is much likelier to help ordinary people than Bush was.

But Obama will, when push comes to shove, come down on the side of the rich. So did Clinton and Carter and everyone else.

Nobody gets elected here who is not generally a supporter of the American status quo and the American status quo is very rich-friendly.

The difference between Bush and Obama/Bill Clinton on tax policy regarding the rich is what... 4% different?

From one perspective 4% is a lot. From another perspective it's a minimal change.

And so on.

49. $700B over ten years
The point is that 4% isn't 40%.

We could raise income tax rate on income over $1M by 40%. If we did it probably wouldn't be the highest such rate in the world.

But 40% is not on the table.

I am not saying we should do 40% but it isn't even discussed.

We fight these wars within 4%, 5% back and forth Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Obama... all wrestling over a fairly small percentage of wealth.

So some see that as no change.

Others see it as a big change.

Both are right in their way.

Either way, nobody should say Obama is the same as Bush in general. On a particular issue one can talk about such comparisons but if Obama is the same as Bush then Obama would be tied for worst President ever.

And that is obviously not right.

50. In the midst of this recession and with this Congress,
no sizeable tax increase is going to get through.

The problem isn't insufficient income taxation, it's the accumulation of wealth that the federal government can't touch except via the estate tax.

127. You don't see a connection between insufficient income taxation
and the accumulation of wealth?

And, while we're at it, isn't all that accumulated wealth to which you allude proof that reduced taxation levels on income do not stimulate, in and of themselves, investment... but rather reduced levels of income taxation lead to accumulation of the proceeds of said income?

Obviously, no sizeable tax increase will get through... especially if no one tries to get it through. The question to ask oneself is: Is it good policy that no sizeable tax increases get through? And then- Are you really satisfied with policy that you don't think is beneficial? (Are you willing to just settle?)— Or, if you think it is good policy, despite the apparent evidence of the aforemention "accumulation", what is the benefit of it?

138. You are WRONG. People who make $250K a year ARE WEALTHY.
Unless... you're Charlie Gibson.

http://mediamatters.org/research/200801060004

During the ABC News-Facebook debate, moderator Charlie Gibson suggested that the Democratic presidential candidates' proposals to roll back or let some of President Bush's tax cuts expire would affect middle-class families, adding, "If you take a family of two professors here at St. Anselm, they're going to be in the $200,000 category that you're talking about lifting the taxes on." According to the U.S. Census, however, the median income for a U.S. household is $48,451, and the mean household income is $65,527; and only 3.4 percent of U.S. households have an income of $200,000 or more.

Obama is currently talking about not renewing the bush tax cuts for the top 2 percent... which I will arbitrarily designate as "rich". That leaves 1.4 percent of the population (about 4.2 million out of 300 million) between $200K and "rich". The notion that those just shy of "rich" are not even "wealthy" is absurd.

And, by the way, there are no servants making $250K a year. If you make $250K a year you are, at worst, a contractor... and if you can't set aside a nice pile of "fuck you money", for when the boss needs to be told to go fuck himself (let's face it, odds are the one paying you $250K a year or more is probably a "he")... then you don't deserve to be making $250K a year in the first fucking place.

:)

40. Mescaline
I can't speak from experience but here's wikipedia:

"Like LSD, mescaline induces distortions of form and kaleidoscopic experiences but which manifest more clearly with eyes closed and under low lighting conditions; however, all of these visual descriptions are purely subjective."

Seeing imagined distortions. Purely subjective. Works better with eyes closed. That sounds right.

But you should really ask a professional like Dave Sirota, Ted Rall, or Cenk.

It's not like anything I could say would make it past the wall of noise in front of you. But, by all means, keep up that brave crusade against anyone who has ever noticed similarities in policy. Of course, that would have to include Obama himself since he's consciously continued a number of Bush's failures, but whatever.

Actually, since Obama is still carrying the same torches Bush carried, it wouldn't take any drugs at all. Just a few moments of reality.

Obama could have been a hero by now, but instead he decided to stab his supporters in their backs. At least with Bush we expected it. So it's more painful to feel Obama's hand on the knife as it's being plunged into our dreams, hopes and desires to make our country better. Just about everything he promised is laying in a huge pool of blood next to the quickly decaying carcass that was once America.

Thanks President Obama...

Sanders' relations with Democrats have a long and checkered history. During his nine years as mayor of Burlington in the 1980s, he often argued that the two major parties were little different from one another, sometimes calling them "tweedle-dum and tweedle-dee."
