Fossils Of Huge Aquatic Lizard Found In SJ Valley

TURLOCK, Calif. (CBS13) ―Piece by piece, an amazing discovery is emerging from a piece of San Joaquin Valley rock and it appears to be a huge 65-million-year-old aquatic lizard from when the ocean waves used to reach the Sierra foothills.

The massive fossil is being extracted from a huge chunk of shale that was brought to CSU Stanislaus from the Panoche Hills of Fresno County.

Susan Bowman, a research intern with the US Bureau of Land Management and a CSU Stanislaus graduate in anthropology, archeology and paleontology, says the fossils appear to belong to a species of long-necked undersea carnivore known as a plesiosaur.

Bowman has extracted 28 fossilized vertebrae, rib fragments and flipper bones.
