What every Democrat from obama and Gibbs down to the posters on this board need to understand
The Republicans play to win.

Lying, cheating, and stealing are nothing to them but methods by which they can win. Consider the widely held belief, spread by Republicans, that Democrats are inherently evil and want to destroy America. The Republicans spread this big lie without remorse or guilt, they spread it so that they can win...nothing more, nothing less.

The irony in this struggle is that Democrats don't have to lie, cheat or steal......all we have to do is to forcefully tell the truth about them.

Republicans are destroying the middle class. Republicans are destroying the public school system. Republicans favor the rich over the poor and middle class. Republicans are destroying our infrastructure.

Most damning of all is that by doing these things and others they are destroying the social fabric which binds this nation, in other words the Republicans are actively destroying our country. This is NOT hyperbole (as their attacks are), this is NOT demagoguery (as their attacks are).

These are absolute, irrefutable facts and our leaders and pundits need to make this the CENTRAL argument to the american people going forward.

That is, if we want to win.

3. From where I am sitting
The Democrats are the ones in charge and the ones intent on ACTUALLY dismantling the public school system.
Until now--it has just been a republican wet dream.

6. This isn't happening in a vacuum
This is happening via pressure from the right.

Look at the Senate, the Repukes have been able to water down or kill progressive legislation by voting as a bloc. A bloc that has little fear of getting called out as the America destroying obstructionists that they are.

Pressure on the right will cow them and allow more progressive legislation to pass.

THe Repukes don't just hate America...........they hate AMERICANS.

10. My brother (or sister)
I won't deny you your anger.

But neither will I forget who the real enemy is.

Republicanisms central tenet is to dismantle the institutions that act as the social framework of this country, i.e. their intent is to Destroy America.

Democratic politicians might be disorganized, ham-handed, and all too accommodating but their intent is generally good.

Unlike the Republicans who are truly hateful and evil.

.. by my supposed friend. You expect me to go along?

You know, the Republicans have all but succeeded in destroying America. We had ONE LAST CHANCE for REAL CHANGE and we did not get it.

It really doesn't matter who is in office now, game is over. You wait and see.

16. I don't agree with your assesment
Dems are not aiding the Republicans, but they are being pushed to the right by them.

The difference is intent, the Dems admittedly are compromising their way into passing some less than ideal legisaltion but it's a function of the right wing constantly attacking and misprepresenting the facts.

The right wants to destroy America as we know it and replace it with a feudalistic system where there is no middle class, only rich and poor.

... and they have just about succeeded. And to say that Obama is powerless is wrong, he is either complicit or he is a pantywaist who can't get anything accomplished because he wants to please everyone.

Either way, no thanks.

9. Welcome to DU
I'm not here as much anymore--because honestly, this place has lost a lot of it's progressive/underground feel for me and seems to be VERY centrist/apologetic/mainstream.
However, you might take time to visit one of DU's finest--madfloridian--journal and educate yourself on how the DEMOCRATS are dismantling the public education system without a heck of a lot of assistance from the republicans.

14. I agree, but its due to pressure from the right
primarily due to the succesful effects of their constant tax/budget efforts to pare down government.

18. And when the people on the left speak up, you know pressure them from the left, they're told
they're fucking retarded, and are on drugs. Basically this White House goes out of its way to spit on the left leaning wing of the party every chance it gets. So for all the talk about pressure from the right it would appear that when this administration gets pressure from the right, it caves and when it gets pressure from the left, it goes into insult mode. That does not bode well for the elections in November.

It might help for you to be here a little while longer in order to obtain a clue about just what we understand and what we do not. Some of us have been battling Rethugligans for four+ decades now, so we do know a bit.

You remind me of me when I returned to my farm after a decade in DC and academia. I was very full of myself, talking incessantly on the front porch of the local general store about anything and everything (but mainly about myself.) Whenever I came up for breath, my long-suffering neighbors would say, as if in a chorus, "Well ....".

It took me a while to learn that "Well ...." was shorthand for "Well, are you done yet?"

You're still welcome here. Almost everyone is.

21. I can't disagree with you but
it's happening because the Repukes have been winning the tax/bugetary argument and they are wining that argument because our pols fail to call them out for destroying the social fabric of this country.

Again, Dems are guilty of trying to compromise with an umcompromising foe.

The Dems are Neville Chamberlain the Repukes are Hitler.

Don't forget that.

15. Absolutely! And until Democrats understand this simple concept, Republicans will have their way.
Yes, Republicans play to win except they are not playing. They understand that this is serious business and they do whatever they need to do in order to prevail. Too often today it seems that Democrats delight in playing by the rules and crave approval and to be liked.

It's time to play hardball. It's time for Obama and Democrats to do things the Chicago way like Sean Connery described in The Untouchables:

28. With All the Polarization on This Board
and all the people I have disagreements with, that is one sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with, and I hope everyone else here does too.

The way the Republicans do it, 'playing to win' requires absolute shamelessness and a complete lack of principles.

In the long run, I believe the GOP is slowly killing itself as a few more people become disillusioned every month. You can't fool all of the people all of the time. So I don't think the right permanent long-term strategy. But in the short run it can be very effective.
