is a fundamental problem with the Democratic Party. The progressive mainstream is and always has been more closely aligned with the "professional left" than DC has ever been willing to admit. In fact, when you ask people what they want from government without all the corporatist propaganda buzz words, the American people are fundamentally further left than the current "centrist" position. But that position does not match the corporate interests and the money that flows into DC so the governmental "left" (aka, the Center - there are very few true lefties left) has to constantly deny the reality of what the American people really want. The irony is that if they every really grew a backbone, they'd have more support and more respect.
