Gonzo and Andy Card (not fetching cheeseburgers) showed up at Ashcroft's bed in ICU and tried to get him to sign off on continuing the warrantless eavesdropping.

How did Falwell make so much money?

By getting his minions to go door to door in Lynchburg and surrounding areas to press his parishoners and the random elderly to sign over the deeds to their house (literally on the front porch) in lieu of tithing or money they knew they weren't putting into the collection basket.

1. I find it incredibly difficult

not to post the truth (thats bad enough) about this man on the day of his death. I recall 30 years ago, my poor Grandma living on social security and barely making ends meet dropping a check into the mail each month to Oral Roberts.

And yet there are those who idolize this man and those like him. I believe I will soon get over my difficulty.

2. You've seen the quote

he directly blamed me and you and anyone who dared think like us for aiding and abetting 9/11. You, me huh?

That was the last straw as far as I was concerned. Living in Va of course you hear more about him and it reflects on you in some way but I happen to have a connection to Lynchburg so I have some one on one stories that I have heard over the years. The funny part is how most of everyone I know who know him fairly directly can't stand him or what he is about and I am talking within the local Baptist circle.

3. I wasn't aware that his roots are in real segregationism.

Not just casual everybody-does-it segregationism, but the hardcore South Shall Rise Again variety. It explains why so much about him is and was nauseating.

4. Actually I didn't either

but considering where he was and the time...no wait that isn't true I heard today on NPR that it was 55 years ago today or so that students in Farmville (an hour from Lynchburg on rt.460) walked out of class in support of desegregation. If you don't know Farmville and surrounding counties responded to Brown v. Board by setting up private schools and letting the blacks have the public school system. To this day it is still pretty much like that well basically the poor go to public schools and everyone else goes to the private schools that are plentiful out there. But there were some that stood up for what was right. They were just high school students too.
