A lot of people self-define themselves as "conservative" simply because, thanks to the RW media machine, they have a much better idea of what a conservative theoretically is. "Oh, conservatives are fiscally responsible and pro-freedom", etc. All the feel-good horseshit that they sell in soundbites and on bumperstickers.

But if you ask a person, say, 20 questions designed to really figure out which side of the political spectrum they're on, they will lean liberal. But they won't identify as liberal because a) they don't know really what it is, and b) they've heard bad things about it and identify it with leaning communist or something.

Money is free speech. So says the SCOTUS, so it shall be. But this means that the richest 1%, which takes home something like 25% of all income, also has 25% of the free speech. The top 5% is out-shouting the bottom 95%.

So the politicians and movers-and-shakers think they're with the majority based on what they're hearing. Which kinda sucks for us.

was a slam harking back to the characterization of protests in the 60's as the work of "outside agitators" - in other words, it is an attempt to deny the validity of the discontent on the left as the work of 'professionals' (and from what profession? I'd love to change careers.) It would be red baiting if this were the 50s and 60s and there was an actual organized left and real left wing political organizations, but it isn't and there aren't and it is just pathetic and stupid.
