Comparison of gas taxes by state
My brother and sister in law are moving from the Philly area to San Francisco
as he's left a big pharma job for one with a biotech (cancer research).

After seeing the discussion about gas prices yesterday and the variation
around the country

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x886372

I e-mailed my sister-in-law a link for a terrific site that provides
a way to find the least expensive prices in your area.

http://www.northcarolinagasprices.com/Price_By_County.aspx?state=NC&c=usa

Good Republican that she is, responded by asking if the difference in gas
prices was all taxes. I went searching for that answer, and found this
interesting report prepared by the State of Washington comparing
gas taxes by State (2006)

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/accountability/fueltax/GasTaxComparisonReport.pdf

These two tables from p.7 indicate that the difference in taxes is NOT
the whole story in the variation in prices.

You really do start scratching your head as to the price differences.
I'm sure supply (pipe lines, refineries) and demand (average distances drived, availability of mass transit) play a role, as well as tax differences,
but there has to be something else going on.

There was an interesting article in our local paper today about
how prices are set by The Pantry

http://www.newsobserver.com/715/story/574250.html

This part really stood out:

A former teacher, Sizemore has been on the job for three months and said he's adjusting to the pace.

"It takes a little while for new people because they're scared to drop it even by a penny," Holmes said. Then again, he said, reaching for a nearby calculator, "A penny times 5,000 gallons a day is $50. Times 365 days and 1,600 stations, it's $29.2 million."

3. Well, stick Texas down at the bottom for the summer months.
The idiots down in Austin are planning to not collect the 20-cents gas tax in the summer, to make up for gasolene price increases. Meanwhile, while giving up many millions of dollars that should go to mass transit as well as to maintaining and building roads, Governor Good-Hair is selling off Texas roads to private (and non-US) concerns as turnpikes.

12. Yeah, we're also the state with the 2nd highest elec rates in the country; 17.2 cents per kWh.
Spitzer has said he's going to do something about the taxes (of all types) and the electrical rates which is great if he can (and that Repub pompous jerk, Bruno doesn't get his way x()... but I really hope he does it soon, there are so many who love NY but are really hurting... I know we sure are. :(

6. Wow. GO NEW JERSEY AT #49!...
Course, they make up for it with their tyrannical cigarette taxes, so guess they can still go fuck themselves.

9. I used to work for a Republican who had no trouble paying high gas tax here in WI.
His reasoning was that it was money that stayed here in Wisconsin. So he would buy gas here rather than going over the state line and paying less in Minnesota. I thought it was odd that a Republican would choose to pay a higher tax.
