Ground-zero "mosque" designed to fuel a religious war
Although it is proposed as a YMCA-type recreational facility, most news sources refer to it as a "mosque." The average US non-Muslim considers building it at 9/11's ground-zero an insult.

Proposals to build the facility do nothing more than fuel anti-Muslim sentiment in America. Media attention is designed to fuel a religious conflict in the hopes of building support for unpopular war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

3. Is this your opinion? I'd love a link concerning
the insults, because that's not what I read.

5. Newsflash, with the exception of fox, media doesn't get a memo every morning
That says, "Okay, Jim, today we're all gonna do THIS!"

Why does media run this shit? Cause the average citizen likes being enraged, it keeps them tuned in. I wish people would blame the fucking morons of society for poor media instead of blaming media.

7. Just because the media has its collective head up its ass and is mischaracterizing what it is

doesn't mean that it is in fact a mosque. In addition, I don't give a shit what the average US non-Muslim considers an insult building at 9/11 ground zero. There's a giant fucking hole in the ground where buildings used to stand and nearly a decade later there's still a giant fucking hole in the ground. In addition it is NOT at ground-zero it is actually blocks away.

Furthermore, I see no reason why this group should not build just because some idiot bigots decided that they want to target Muslims. They are under no obligation to curtail their activities to appease a bunch of bigots. Especially bigots whom don't give a damn about NYC except to exploit the events of September 11, 2001. They can go to hell and stay the fuck out of my city while they're at it.

Unrec for appeasement fail.

12. The opposition to the Center is too silly to be taken seriously.
Edited on Wed Aug-11-10 08:30 AM by Smarmie Doofus
1. The Muslim population in NYC is in excess of 10%. That's in excess of 700,000 people. They have a right to have a community center.

2. The Center isn't even AT ground zero.( Which shouldn't matter either; but it's an added absurdity.)

3. All Muslims are not fundamentalist Muslims and all indications are that only a tiny minority of American Muslims are even slightly interested in breaking any American laws.

4. I will occassionally counsel DEMs to backburner hot button issues to achieve a greater good ( or avoid a greater evil). But this is not one of those times or one of those issues. Bowing to the crazies will set a blatantly unconstitutional and antidemocratic precedent. Moreover, we will pass up a *very* rare opportunity to educate the general public on an issue that IS REALLY NOT THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND.

Some issues are complicated. This isn't one of them.
