Being wrong while being right (insightful comments by blackwaterdog)
Edited on Wed Aug-11-10 08:11 AM by NJmaverick
Gibbs did a stupid thing, he should have known better, but he told the truth. And those who actually read all his comments know that he was NOT talking about the grassroots, about people who worked hard to get Barack Obama elected, not to mention the 90% approval he's got among Liberals - it's a bad spin - he talked about the same people Michael Moore once called "The Professional Left", those who makes very good money from their job as "Lefties", regardless the reality, regardless the damage they inflict.

It's about joining the Right Wing in creating a narrative of failure around a very good Liberal president. It's just amazing. In 18 months of some of the most toxic political environment in history, the man did more to promote the progressive cause than anyone but two other presidents, and he's "Like Bush"?

You can't just criticize him ALL THE TIME, never have his back, and then insist that it's about keeping his feet on fire. No one except Rachel Maddow even bother to mention most of the great progressive stuff that he has done. There's a whole new criteria for this president - Do twice the job for half the credit.

When the most Liberal president in decades is labeled as "Bush" 24/7 by the "Liberal media", when Right Wing talking points being used as weapon against him from the left - then it doesn't matter much who will win this November. Or in 2012 - and i'm almost ready to bet that it won't be Barack Obama, that he'll take the family and go home. I'm pretty sure that Bill Maher can win the election.

2. Has this Administration done anything wrong in your opinion or are they equivelent to God?
I no longer trust the man and hardly listen to anything he says because I know it is just talk. Actions speak much louder. "Beginning on Day One"..."One Brigade a Month".."No more Supplemental War Spending Bills".."I will close Gitmo"...

5. Exactly
They want Gibbs to be both exaggerating, and narrowly focused at the same time. It was a broad brush attack on his critics from the left.

therefore he was not just speaking to the professional left (whoever that is). I have seen the support of Kucinich used as an attack against the left on this very board.

It is no secret that Kucinich is quite far to the left.

Now you take that statement, and run it through the DU Martyr Brigade filter, and Ipso facto, presto chango, Gibbs just insulted everybody on the planet who is a leftist.

I'm not unhappy with things like the Senate republicans and blue dogs killing the anti-foreclosure bill that Obama said publicly he would sign. No I'm unhappy with things like Bagram and I would be unhappy with Kucinich if he had Bagram open for business. It is a sad day when Kucinich, someone who stands up for human rights and habaes corpus is considered way, way, way, far to the left.

because some people on the left are unreasonable and don't appreciate the political realities democrats face.

28. wanting it is one thing
expecting it and relentlessly trashing anything short of that goal as a sell-out to corporate is another

I want universal single payer healthcare.
I want the wars to end.
I want the pentagon budget slashed in half.
I want the banks nationalized.
I want a social safety net that eliminates the possibility of hunger, homelessness, lack of education, or other basic rights
I want the workers of the world to unite and cast of the chains of oppression from our capitalist overlords

but I would be a goddamn fool if I expected those things to happen with the government we have, spent my days whining about it not happening, and dismissing any move towards those ideals as not good enough and a personal betrayal.

24. Great post. Gibbs was clearly directing his criticism to a very small subset of the overall left.
And that very small subset DESERVES to be criticized. If people think that Obama is similar to Bush in most ways, asking "what drug are they on" is a perfectly valid response.

He was not attacking all left-leaning criticism of Obama.

44. That "anonymous blogger" (when did fame equal correctness btw?) is constantly
in the list of the top rated blogs at Daily Kos. That blogger is also frequently mentioned and quoted in DU and at least 2 other political websites I am aware of. Still what does fame have to do with being right or wrong. That is one of the oddest assertions I have seen on DU in some time.
