I gained a little insight into rightwing nativism today. |
|
I'm working in Oklahoma right now. While talking with some other service company hands involved with this project, I mentioned that my coworker is American. Universally, these people's reactions has been to scoff, or at least raise their eyebrows and disagree. My coworker is Colombian, and has immigrated and taken his citizenship, showing full commitment and pride in our country. He has a swarthy complexion, and speaks fluent English with a Latino accent. The others I was discussing his citizenship with all said, 'he's not a real American, like you or me.' So my insight is that they consider being American an ethnicity. Yes, these people were all white, like me. What's creepy besides the blatant racism, is the identifying of white America as 'real' America. It smacks of the Third Reich.

On a side note, Oklahoma was the only state where Obama didn't win any of the counties. He only got 34% of the vote. That's worse than even Dukakis who got 41% in OK.
