The "Try Real Hard To Say Something Nice About Falwell" Thread
Edited on Tue May-15-07 04:58 PM by impeachdubya
My momma always taught me that, if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all.. And I've done a fairly decent job of completely ignoring that advice all these years.

Particularly, in the case of someone as downright noxious as the now late Theocratic Windbag Jerry Falwell, such a mandate is challenging, to say the least. But Eris knows I don't need the bad karma of excessively rippin' on the guy now that he's shuffled off to what I suspect is an "afterlife" vastly different than anything he ever pontificated about.

So let's think of some nice stuff to say about the guy. Here, I'll start:

He had very rosy cheeks, and his head looked like a big pink marshmallow...

I like marshmallows.

What is the definition of great? Hateful? Judgemental? Divisive? Vitriolic? Insane? Fascist?

If falwell's like really could rule this nation, we'd have our own unique version of Nuremburg right here.

73. Really? Because it seems to me his agenda was pretty political.
And he laid the foundation for much of what we, today, consider the religious right.

And the religious right is DIRECTLY responsible for that disastrous idiot in the White House.

So what are the worldly "accomplishments" of Falwell and his "great ministries" that you agree with?

64. Lyrics
Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
circus comes to town, you play the lead clown
Please, please
spreading his disease, living by his story
Knees, knees
falling to your knees, suffer for his glory
You will

Time for lust, time for lie
time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
and you'll get a better seat

Bow to Leper Messiah

Marvel at his tricks, need your Sunday pips
blind devotion came, rotting your brain
Chain, chain
Join the endless chain, taken by his glamour
Fame, Fame
Infection is the game, stinking drunk with power
We see

Bow to Leper Messiah

Witchery, weakening
Sees the sheeps are gathering
set the trap, hypnotize
now you follow

Lie.

he never kicked a dog.

I have to admit, however, that after reading the news while at work - that I went to a colleague of similar perspectives to tell her the news. I gave no sarcasm in the announcement. But I did chuckle at her response (she was on hold on the phone, and signalled a sarcastic "oh no!" So while I try to be gracious - even for jerks - I have to admit I went for a vicarious dismissive response.

79. I agree. The guy's dead, I don't want to be especially mean about it. I'm somewhere in between
giving the occasion way more solemnity than the dude deserves, and marching around my neighborhood in a clown suit with a drum strapped to my belly, playing "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead" on a Kazoo.

...Somewhere in between those two extremes.

81. I figure that at some point in the near future
I can go back to disdain per specific actions/statements he made. Yet upon the death of a person I can not jump to that place. Primarily out of respect to those left behind by the person. That grief is real and I respond to it empathetically. After time goes by - then back to laying out my opinions about the actions/statements of the person.
