President Obama: "Please Commit to Vote in 2010"
Aug 12, 2010

Today President Obama sent an email to OFA supporters asking them to commit to vote in the 2010 elections this November:

EIGHTEEN years ago, shortly after graduating from law school, I helped lead a voter registration campaign in Chicago that generated record turnout on Election Day.

That experience taught me one of the most important lessons I ever learned as a community organizer: When people promise that they'll do something -- like voting -- they are far more likely to do it.

That's why one key part of our Vote 2010 plan this year is to get folks like you from across the country to commit to vote, to make sure we get as many people as we can to cast their ballots this fall.

But getting the commitments we need starts with your own promise to make it to the polls and cast your ballot.

Will you please commit to vote in the 2010 elections?

Over the next 82 days, volunteers across the country will spend countless hours calling voters and knocking on their doors, asking them the same question.

And you can bet that I am counting on you to join them in talking to voters in your community.

This election offers a stark choice. We Democrats are hard at work trying to move America forward, repairing a decade of damage and growing an economy based on the Main Street values of hard work and responsibility.

We've fought for and won historic reforms to our health care system, a victory 100 years in the making, and to Wall Street, the most sweeping overhaul of the financial system since the Great Depression.

But after years of policies that landed us in the worst recession since the 1930's, the Republicans who got us there have not come up with anything different from the policies of George W. Bush.

We simply cannot afford to go backwards or let them repeal our reforms. And making sure we can continue moving forward starts with your own promise to cast your ballot in these elections.

Please commit to vote this fall: http://my.barackobama.com/Commitment

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

3. I replied to that e-mail
explained that I haven't missed an election of any sort since I turned 18, 40 years ago. I also told him I was a member of the professional left that just might have wanted our congressional representatives to actually represent us.

I'm sure I'll get a personal reply.

4.  I almost replied but decided not to waste my time
I also didn't go to the link. I'll vote but not because someone wants me to pledge my vote. I vote because I consider it a privilege to vote.

OUR congressional reps do represent us. The rethug senators are the spokes

I plan on voting-I have since I was old enough. Luckily in my local races there's no one that I have to hold my nose for. I feel sorry for those states where they are stuck in voting for blue dog DINO.

10. Its hard to get excited and want to get out and vote for
more of the same of what Obama and the Dems have accomplished so far. Watered down, weak, and wimpy are the words that come to mind. No wonder Dems in polls are so apathetic about voting this November.

Yah, Obama has done jackshit. Don't put blame where it belongs- in the party of no.
Let's just cry a river, be Debbie Downers and dream of violins.

Those rethug talking points are what stand out in your post.

30. Yes I have. All but one dem voted for extending unemployment benefits.
The dems stood up for you and I, but the repubs overruled them. So yeah, stay home and withhold your votes from these democrats who have voted for your best interests. Let the repubs gain a majority. I don't really know what you're doing in this forum.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 06:05 PM by Ramulux
Signed it pretty quickly and made a comment about how the white house needs to listen to progressives more or no one is going to show up. Probably not gonna do anything but I was going to vote anyways and I figure the more people who sign this, the better our chances are in November.

Everyone on this site should sign this and leave the same comment. I am as pissed as anyone at the white house and the dems but we really need to help swing the political narrative in this country in our favor. We have to make our opinions heard and also make it clear that we are not going to puss out this election.

19. Mr Obama, then you have basically two months to prove it's worth caring.
To date, it isn't. Stop the middle class and lower class suffering and quit kissing the asses of the rich, elite corporations.

23. Because
sadly we live in a time in which we are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. It sucks, deal with it.

29. How did we get to live in a time where those are our options, and how do we fix it?
Continuing down the same path isn't logical, if fixing it is an actual concern.

If you like things this way, and like having to choose between the lesser of two evils, you can skip the question.

Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 12:21 PM by Ramulux
because of the big money interests which dominate our political system. The only way to fundamentally change anything is campaign finance reform. Until we make it possible for candidates to run and stand a chance without needing to accept donations from various special interests, we are fucked.

Also the other tactic is to do everything possible to keep the dems in power and primary the shitty corrupt ones.

22. The FUNNY THING about the PROFESSIONAL LEFT ...
... we VOTE, whereas many among the large masses of people who elected Obama in 2008 need a healthy dose of passion & motivation to get their butts to the polls.

How well do Gibbs, Emmanuel, et al think their current strategy is gonna work in that regard?

32. I responded to that by saying I commit to vote for the most progressive anti-war candidates
on the ballot. If they are Democrats they'll get my votes. If not, I'll still be voting but looking elsewhere or writing in candidates.
