facebook argument over extension of unemployment....
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 05:10 PM by ejpoeta
OK. I am eileen ostrander in this. several people were saying how people could get a job if they want to do manual labor and how the unemployed are just lazy and not even looking. i countered with the 5 people applying for every job on average thing. then i said it would probably be even hard to get a job at mcdonalds. well, there are applications there!! right there. as if that must mean it's easy to get a job there. if you have swarms of people trying to get a seasonal job at a ball park, then it's going to be hard to even get a job and mcdonald's isn't it. sorry. these people just tick me off.

K.... Government assistance is supposed to be a safety net, NOT A HAMMOCK
Schumer Co-Sponsoring Bill To Extend Unemployment Benefits to 119 Weeks
washingtonindependent.com
Yesterday, Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) introduced a bill to provide extra weeks of federally paid-for unemployment insurance benefits for the 99ers — the pool of 1.4 million Americans workers who have exhausted their maximum weeks of federal and state benefits.

K.... Oh, and only SOME states can get the money. States that are surviving O.K. will pay, but cannot benefit from the redistribution.

TE....b yeah, it isnt like unemployment is at 9.5% and has been for a while. It's not like we are losing more jobs then we are creating in this country. Oh wait, it is that way!!! I ask anyone that is working now to go apply for a job. If you get it, refuse it. See how long it takes to get one. BTW, I have a job and have been there the past 15 years so extending unemployment benefits doesnt affect me.

TC... It's not a free lunch. First and foremost, you have to have worked in previous eightenn months and paid into the system for that long to even qualify. Let's focus on illegal immigrants who haven't paid shit into the social service system who are allowed welfare, social security, and Medicaid for not lifting a finger.

TE.... Thomas, I agree with one exception. Employees dont pay into unemployment directly, employers do. As for illegal immigrants, if we go after the employers, they wont come here because there will be no jobs for them.

MV.... I know many hard working, skilled, educated, and willing people that can't find employment, so I for one applaud the extension of these benefits during this Depression. I understand the anger toward those that take advantage of the free handouts, but this Bill should not be the target for that anger. I am thankful that I am not unemployed because I see the pain it is causing good hard working friends and there families.

TC.... Tap, I don't have a problem with the ones who come here and earn their fare share. It's the ones who show up and think the world owes them a living I have a problem with.

JS.... Some abuse the privilege; some simply can't find a job that pays as much as unemployment does. It's not good to paint everyone with the same brush. But I do agree with the basic statement: safety net, not hammock!

KD.....n I was out of work and had to pay my bills and feed my kids. I worked two jobs to do it. That's the way it works sometimes. You may have a minimum wage job, but working two can help.

Eileen Ostrander five people are applying for every 1 job on average. my brother in law has been out of work for over a year now. he has been on a lot of interviews. at keast twice he has been offered a job just to have them decide they weren't going to fill that position. it's easy to say that people just aren't trying, but the fact is that most are. and it has been proven that this kind of stimulus gets the best ROI.

Eileen Ostrander not to mention the fact that a lot of jobs want x experience and education now and want to pay $10/hour. that leaves those with less experience and less education having a harder time. then you have people lining up for a few seasonal jobs at a ball park too. it's easy to say the jobs are there.... but they aren't. probably hard to get hired at mcdonalds these days.

KD..... Stick to the necessities in life, not the comforts. You don't need cable to survive. You need food, clothes and a roof over your head. If you want it, you can get it. If you believe you CAN'T, you won't.

Eileen Ostrander it's not about what is the perfect job. there are other things. if you were making $40k a year and paying your bills and had daycare etc.... making $15 isn't even going to come close to paying those bills. i like how black and white it is for everyone.

1. Please change people's names or use initials.
It is the considerate thing to do, since many of those people probably have privacy controls on their facebook activity.

2. I vote against that.
If those assholes are going to spout bullshit under their own names, so be it.

3. Posting their real names and facebook comments on a publically viewed, political discussion board

could also be seen as an assholish thing to do. It's simply unethical. Ejpoeta, I assume you are not purposely printing their names in order to make a point. But if these people are "friends" in one way or another, even the slightest bit, then I recommend that you use initials. This will come back to bite you in the ass.
