Somewhere, someone loved Jerry.
Sure the guy was the anti-thesis of all that Christ taught, but
please, do consider that people who loved him are hurting terribly right now.
Every word posted here counts and has the potential to cause great pain
to another.
Take the high road DU.
Please?

1. then they will mourn him.
I won't.

I'm a member of the community he strove to villify and destroy.
High road?

Oh,I'm sorry--I've hurt one of his family member's friends! Oh noes! Why didn't they speak up on behalf of all the pain he's caused to me and my community.

Am I blaming 9/11 on gays, lesbians, and ACLUers?

Somehow, I don't think I'm sinking to his level.

24. please
try to hear this in the spirit i'm trying to say it in WindRavenX-

What I find disturbing in the attitude you are supporting isn't that you don't have reason to feel every single emotion that being harmed by someone for NO REASON feels-!!! But when those who have faced the pain that Falwell's words cause- turn, and say basically-

"f--- his 'family'- screw those who are mourning- those who grieve this mans death- I could care less- 'cause he was a cruel man, who didn't care what his words did to others"

Can you see the connection? Can you see why even though many share the outrage and bear the wounds that the hate he preached inflicted, say STOP!!!- don't do this!!!

Don't let the same kind of destructive attitude rule YOU- ???

I wish i could say this clearer- people don't have to pretend his life should be celebrated- but right now, this ISN'T about Falwell- it's about US- individually. We CHOOSE to act in ways that destroy, or build up. I want to spread peace, acceptance, healing and kindness- and i don't believe we can do that with hate. do you?? really???

I hope you can hear this despite me-
peace,
blu

I chose to not mourn him.

It's as simple as that.

I don't hate his family , I wish his family peace for dealing with his evil, but that's it.

12. Yes, of course I do.
He is dead now and it's between him and God now.
I deplore everything the man did and said.
But, I will not prove him right by becoming the thing he accused us of.

Sometimes the level of hate on DU astounds me.
Again, I say take the high road so that no blame can be cast
upon us.

Those who behave as civil beings can not be associated
with all that he strove to associate us with.

41. you might want to consider
that those who 'loved' him might be in more need of commiseration than anyone else in the world.

We don't honestly get to 'choose' who we love, and who we are connected to, most of the time. Love isn't something people can simply 'turn off' because the person is someone we don't like.

There are those who are connected to people who don't live very 'nice' lives- but who are a 'part' of them none the less- We don't choose our parents- and sometimes even the worlds worst parent is still loved by their child(ren). It not only hurts to have 'them' as a parent- it hurts to lose hope that things could change- and hurts to know that people hate you because of who your parent was- and maybe you hate yourself a bit, because of what you feel- or don't feel. At any rate, it is not a position anyone would CHOOSE to be in. Yet you say you've chosen to hate them- ???

I choose to extend sympathy to those who are in mourning for the loss of a loved one- Doing this doesn't say anything about the character or deeds of the deceased- it says more about what "we" truly hold dear- and believe- despite all claims to the contrary-

"Hatred cannot drive out hatred- only love can." MLKjr.

but I sure didn't like him. And I didn't much mourn when he died. I haven't been to his grave since they plonked him into it...in 1959. I don't really even know exactly where it is.

74. Hey! Did we have the same father?
Actually, that'd be impossible since I wasn't born until 61. But I believe we may have experienced some of the same bigotry and racism at home. I can remember one Sunday, my dad had a bbq party for folks at his work. His Asst. Plant Manager was black. Very nice man, with a wonderful family. They were the last to leave that day, and I remember sitting in the back yard listening to my dad and Roscoe (yeah, stereotypical maybe, but that was his name) laugh about work, people, life, and everything else while they were drinking Budweiser like it was water. As we were standing in the driveway waving to them as they left, my dad said something like "I'm sure glad that NI@@ER is gone".

My whole world changed that day.

He's still alive, and I can stand no more than a two day visit to his house before I've had enough of him, his attitudes, his meanness, and bill fucking o'lie-ly.

I've tried, so help me I've tried. I even took my medicinal marijuana perscription with me when I visited last, trying to get him to try it for his pain instead of limpdick's hillbilly heroin. Good thing I did it on the night before we left to come home...

The only thing that makes me anxious about his passing is the fact that I'll be the "Patriarch". I'm not mature enough for that!

My old man would feign a kind of acceptance but when they left, I heard the same kinds of comments you mention.
He spent a couple of years in a German university (Karlsrhue) which got me my first name...at least that's what he claimed, in the late 1930s and I didn't really grasp until I was grown that it was probably the genesis of his nazi leanings. He even sported a mustache exactly like Adolph's. I shit you not.

Wow. Germany in the late 30's. The mustache? Nightmarish stuff. I can't imagine what he must have been like. Actually, I'm not sure I want to know.

... are "just as bad", they'll just say "hate is hate".

Watch all of the self-avowed "friends" to gay folks at a time like this - see which ones start accusing gay folks of "hatred" or of being "just as bad" as someone-or-other. You know who is *truly* with-you-without-being-one-of-you at a time such as this.

Similarly, white folks show their true faces to black folks at analogous times.

The duplicity is shocking at first, but it gets to be old hat after awhile.

You are holier than me, I guess for being free of the element of hate. It must be nice to live hate-free, gosh maybe you can write a book telling people how they can be free of that pesky hate.

Your equation that all hate is equal is wrong, simplistic and insulting to thinking people everywhere.

All are legitimate. High, low, or no road - everyone has a choice.

It's an individual thing - words can also offer great comfort. And who's to say which is which? I can tell you I grew up in Falwell's Bible Belt; and he was a master at spewing words with the potential to cause great pain. I saw it first hand.

I'm not dancing on his grave, but I'm also not going to tell someone else whether they should or not.

The 'somewhere' that you refer to is a bizarro place called the bushco* White House.
This alliance helped to consolidate power and mobilize the right wing base.
All of the hate speak brought out the 80 IQ single-issue-voters allowing the neocons to rape the land, trample the consitiution, and make the government into a spend-it-all-before-the-rapture arm of big business.

52. The Amish recently gave us a good model to follow, and they did it in the midst of great
loss and pain.

Peace is either a way of life for us at all times, or it's just a mirage.

Seriously, do you think anyone who truly loved that man would be reading this?

I happen to believe that it is between him and his maker.personally, I do not want
to be remembered for behaving exactly as he did.

That is not our fault, it is his.

79. Our rants don't get near the level of what he said/did
Our words today won't change the path of the country as far as the separation of church and state. Our words won't deny any minority group any of their undeniable rights. Our words don't blame anyone but his hateful self.

But, good for you - you don't have to worry about what some unknown assholes will have to think about you 10 years from now. I'm sure they'll be searching the archives just to get hurt by our words.

Falwell Refuses To Apologize For Lucifer Attack, Swears To Repeat It ‘Over And Over Again’

Appearing on MSNBC today, Rev. Jerry Falwell responded to criticism of his recent attack
comparing Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to Lucifer. Asked whether his remarks were disrespectful,
Falwell said, “I do not.” MSNBC’s anchor then asked, “So I take this to mean that will you not
be apologizing to Hillary Clinton?” Falwell answered, “No, I will say it over and over again.”
Falwell said it was clear his comments were tongue-in-cheek “because there’s no way that
Lucifer’s going to run .”

Watch it: http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/26/falwell-devil-response/

MSNBC: Do you believe you were disrespectful?

FALWELL: I do not.

MSNBC: Do I take this to mean that you’re not going to be apologizing to Senator Clinton?

FALWELL: No, I’ll be saying it over and over again.

Nothing posted on DU will effect the relatives of Fartwell!
I'm sure his grandkiddies have already learned his vile message and behaviors!

70. little wrong vs. big wrong

apparently blaming gays and feminists for 911 is the same exact size wrong as posters expressing joy over falwell's passing.

That is your broken equation, not mine.

71. Falwell stole his roommate's fiance
Wish they would find the roommate and have him share HIS version of the "long story"

http://www.bhsbees.com/jerry_falwell_bio.htm

I first saw Macel on my conversion night, January 20, 1952. She was playing the church piano. We met shortly thereafter. At the time, she was engaged. I had my work cut out for me. As fate would have it, her fiancée was my dorm roommate at BBC later that year. It is a long story, but God brought us together before 1952 was history. We have been in love ever since.

72. yeah and someone somewhere loved hitler too
the difference is she had the decency to go down w. the ship when he passed

look, anybody who really, truly loved falwell is an evil shithead

evil shitheads do not deserve my sympathy, they deserve my scorn, and it is our duty as human beings to put peer pressure and scorn on those who encourage hate of gays, liberals, and atheists

thank you for playing
