Senator Bernie Sanders: Name Elizabeth Warren to Consumer Post |
|
OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 13, 2010 1:26 PM
CONTACT: Senator Bernie Sanders Michael Briggs or Will Wiquist (202) 224-5141
Name Elizabeth Warren to Consumer Post
WASHINGTON - August 13 - Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today pressed for President Obama to name consumer advocate and Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren to head a new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau created by the new Wall Street reform law.
“Elizabeth has played a great role in standing up to Wall Street. Given that the outrageous greed, recklessness and illegal behavior on Wall Street caused the horrendous recession that we are still suffering through, it is absolutely necessary that we have a strong, smart consumer advocate who will look out for their needs as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,” Sanders said.
“Maybe the biggest reason to support her is that the big banks are pulling out all the stops to block her nomination. They are afraid of having someone looking over their shoulder who knows the ways they rip off consumers and will make them stop it,” Sanders added.
Sanders took note of concerns voiced by some about whether Warren could win Senate confirmation. “She has a very good chance to be confirmed, but it is a fight worth having. This is a debate that has to happen.” ###

4. Sometimes the fight, or process, is as important as the nomination. |
|
If Warren is the right person to protect consumers, which I believe she is, then they should fight to get her placed
It is way past due to worry about a confrontation with the repukes on this. The lessons are more than obvious that all the repukes will do is obstruct
There are some Democrats such as dodd and others, who most likely have conflicts of interest against her, but this should be fought regardless

5. White House has said she's 'very confirmable.' Dodd seems to be carrying water for a future employer |

7. I'd say she has a better chance than the other names that have been floated, |
|
Assistant Attorney General Gene Kimmelman and Assistant Treasury Secretary Michael Barr. From what I have read Kimmelman sounds like a good guy; he was head of a consumer watchdog group, but I believe his real expertise is in the field of telecommunications. Barr I think will be problematic given the fact that his current boss and biggest supporter for the position is Geithner, who has strong critics on both sides of the aisle. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/growing-support-for-warren-to-head-consumer-agency-2010-07-28?reflink=MW_news_stmp

2. It is definitely a fight worth having. With the election looming, it would be a perfect |
|
forum to expose the repukes for what they are
I will be very surprised if the Obama administration agrees to the confrontation

Just got back from the gym, woke up my Mac, and that was the first thing I read.
Refocused my eyes and came back to reality.
