National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) members attended a National Night Out Block Party on the 3300 block of Colfax in North Minneapolis to thank community members who helped out in a crisis.

Bryan Bloomquist was attacked by two pit bulls while delivering mail on July 27. Three people who heard his cries for help rushed to intervene. De’Angelo Boldt grabbed a baseball bat from his home, Lawrence Blackful rushed to the scene and grabbed a lawn sign to fight off the dogs, and Bridgette Shepard drove her vehicle onto the sidewalk to try and chase the dogs away from the wounded letter carrier. The dogs finally retreated to the front steps of the home where they lived, and police officers arrived on the scene and dispatched them.

One week later, Pam Donato, president of NALC Branch 9 presented the three neighbors with plaques declaring them community heroes. Bryan Bloomquist attended the block party as his first trip back to the scene of the attack. More than 40 letter carriers joined residents at the cookout and celebrated Bryan’s recovery. Congressman Keith Ellison told everyone at the gathering that it was great to be with heroes who put themselves at risk to jump in and help someone in danger. He also commented that letter carriers are everyday heroes who do their jobs in all kinds of conditions, and are an important part of our communities.

1. I hope they presented those nice people with plaques
and not plagues!

Hooray for these good neighbors, and thanks to the NALC (and you, Steve) for bringing them to our attention.
