WWAFD?

...

Manners are what separate us from the savages. WWAFD?

(edited to change pithy quote back to an original) We each have role models, AF is one I think of and try to emulate, though fail by far.

2. Not true.
What separates us from the evil ones is the fact we have morals and won't kill or murder for money. Manners is just an added bonus IMO.

edited, tried to make pithy saying more current, back to pithiness. Hmmm, off to stridently held opinion with pithy quote.

7. FWIW it is nice that some of us on DU have manners.
I exclude myself from that bunch; I also have hate and anger in my heart. And I say non-PC things all the time. Also, I have stinky feet. Sometimes I drive real slow in the left-hand lane. I pick my nose.

6. You wanna speak for yourself instead of this "us" and "we" bullshit.
I consider politeness an indication of the respect you have for fellow people.

5. He'd be happy the fucker's dead.
Atticus Fitch spent his career fighting bigots like Falwell.

8. I agree. He'd be happy. And he would continue fighting bigots.
rather than gleefully pissing on their graves. And yes, I know, AF is a fictional character. But he is a good role model.

10. He also wasn't a holier than thou prig...
that spent his time telling other people they shouldn't celebrate Falwell's comeuppance.

11. you take offense at someone saying AF is a good role model, insult "a prig"?
whatever. I am not perfect, far from it oh hooligan, but I like to think of the fictional AF and think what would he do. I do not always do it, but think of it. If this makes me into a holier than thou prig in your estimation, well, there you are.

12. No, I think Atticus Finch was a fine role model.
I just don't think he'd be hanging around here pretending to be classy.

14. The book To Kill a Mockingbird changed my life.
I was very young when this book came out and then the movie. I saw it over and over at the theatre. I would cry each time I saw it.
It was just before the civil rights marches really heated up. I lived in a small southern town and as a caucasian child I would stage my own little protests. I would sit in the balcony with my black friends. I was called a 'n**** lover' and got into fights as a result. I was in a band when a city official asked us to play for a visiting dignitary. When I discovered it was George Wallace on a campaign visit I waited until the last minute and cancelled the gig leaving the racist assholes without music to welcome him.
If only America could come to understand the values of Atticus Finch.

WWAFD thanks for the reminders. My mind has been flooded with memories.

15. wow, thank you for sharing that with us.
I have few people, real or fictional, that have affected me like that character. The book is written so well, the story so great for any time and even just how she writes, whew. Dignity, decorum, are fine. It does not mean you do not have feelings, or are repressed, just dignity and decorum and doing the right thing. I try, I fail, but I try. Thank you.

18. She was quite a person also.
Not just doing what she had to do, but writing it and just how she was. Another dignified person.

"Try to hide"?
