contrarian view of Falwell farewell: few individual deaths make much difference |
|
Maybe if someone had killed Hitler the Nazis wouldn't have geled quite as well or if FDR had been taken out before the New Deal took off, but for the most part, it doesn't make that much difference. There is kind of a current of history, a spirit of the age, and if one player falls out, someone else takes his place or the whole thing takes a slightly different form.
Actually, we saw this a bit with Falwell himself. He was eclipsed through most of the late 80s and early 90s by Robertson.
Likewise, Bush himself is a more obvious turd for his ignorance and cruelty, but a more eloquent and subtle republican pursuing similar policies would have eventually roused similar public opposition. Nixon after all was smart and competent if not quite cuddly, and he was still a point or two less popular than Bush now.

1. The hater dies, yet the hate persists. Our struggle is against hate and bigotry. |

2. I wonder if we would know the names Don Wildmon & Fred Phelps if Falwell |

hadn't paved the way in the spotlight.
