A Chicago cop faces up to 14 years behind bars after he was convicted Monday of fatally running down a 15-year-old Morgan Park High School student and trying to cover up his crime.

Cook County Judge Michael P. Toomin found Charlton McKay, 34, guilty of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident and filing a false police report.

He rejected McKay's claim that his car had been stolen and that a thief was behind the wheel when sophomore basketball standout Eddie Lucas was killed by McKay's speeding black Cadillac at 109th Street and Vincennes on Sept. 22, 2005.

McKay had been spotted drinking at Geno's bar in Calumet Park just two hours earlier. He reported the car stolen the next morning. It was found abandoned near his house with an empty bottle of Seagram's Gin on the front seat.

Only fourteen years for that crime? OK, there was no intent to kill the kid, but damn...the drinking and the cover-up oughta be worth a few more years tacked on the sentence.
