Would people be ok being tagged as being a "Christist"?

Words matter.

For a while media types dropped the Islamist meme (except for Fox).

There are BILLIONS of Islamic people. We may not agree with their beliefs, but for us to use our media to "re-label" them is just another stick poked into a hornet's nest. I'm pretty sure that anyone who is Islamic must have a "democRAT-senator" moment every time they hear that word..

shame on our media...again:(

1. Yes, yes. I'll be referring to the Bible-thumping wing of the GOP as "Christianists" ...
for the duration. And seeing as this Islamist thing will probably be going on for as long as we've got the War on Terror -- which is to say, forever -- I suppose I'll be referring to folks like Pat Robertson as Christianists for the remainder of my existence.

2. There are billions of Muslim people, but there are not billions of
ultra-radical terroristic followers of Wahabbi Islam, and THAT is who 'Islamist' refers to - those who use a tortured version of the faith for radical terrorism.

Much the same as Christist terrorists use a tortured version of Chrisianity in advocating for their un-Christian theocracy.

Islamist has a specific meaning and it does not apply, and never has applied, to Islam as a whole.

3. You are profoundly uninformed if you think it merely a meme.

The Quilliam Foundation is a Muslim think tank in Britian set up to challenge Islamic extremism which they state is a threat to pluralism and democracy. They are just one voice among many Muslims concerned about the rise of Islamism.

Quilliam description of Islamism:

"It is the belief that Islam is a political ideology, as well as a faith. It is a modernist claim that political sovereignty belongs to God, that the Shari'ah should be used as state law, that Muslims form a political rather than a religious bloc around the world and that it is a religious duty for all Muslims to create a political entity that is governed as such. Islamism is a spectrum, with Islamists disagreeing over how they should bring their ‘Islamic’ state into existence.

Some Islamists seek to engage with existing political systems, others reject the existing systems as illegitimate but do so non-violently, and others seek to create an 'Islamic state' through violence. Most Islamists are socially modern but others advocate a more retrograde lifestyle. Islamists often have contempt for Muslim scholars and sages and their traditional institutions; as well as a disdain for non-Islamist Muslims and the West."

However nothing makes the point about the reality of Islamist ideology quite like Channel 4's (UK) undercover documentary about the Islamic extrmism being preached in some large British mosques. Links to the programme below. Quotes from the imans themselves should make anyone sit up and take note.

snip

Dr. Ijaz Mian on the subject of non-Muslim laws: “You cannot accept the rule of the kaffir…e have to rule ourselves and we have to rule the others.”<3>

Abu Usamah saying of apostates: “If the imam wants to crucify him he should crucify him. The person is put up on the wood and he's left there to bleed to death for three days.”<4>

Abu Usamah speaking on the deficiency of women's minds: “Allah has created the woman, even if she gets a PhD, deficient. Her intellect is incomplete, deficient. She may be suffering from hormones that will make her emotional. It takes two witnesses of a woman to equal the one witness of the man.”<4>

Abdullah el-Faisal: “You have to bomb the Indian businesses, and as for the Jews you kill them physically.”
Advocates violent Jihad against the non-Muslims and predicting that an army of Muslims will arise against the non-Muslims in England.

Dr Bilal Philips on marriage with girls before puberty: “The prophet Muhammad practically outlined the rules regarding marriage prior to puberty. With his practice, he clarified what is permissible, and that is why we shouldn't have any issues about an older man marrying a younger woman, which is looked down upon by this society today, but we know that Prophet Mohammed practised it, it wasn’t abuse or exploitation, it was marriage.”<4>

Condemns Muslim integration into British society.<3>

Calls for the overthrow of the British government and democracy.<7>

hey will fight in the cause of Allah. I encourage all of you to be from amongst them, to begin to cultivate ourselves for the time that is fast approaching where the tables are going to turn and the Muslims are going to be in the position of being uppermost in strength, and when that happens, people won’t get killed – unjustly.”<6>

Dr. Mian: “You are in a situation in which you have to live like a state within a state, until you take over.”

Al Jibali: “By the age of ten, it becomes an obligation on us to force her to wear hijab, and if she doesn’t wear hijab, we hit her.”<6>

Dr. Mian praised the Saudi religious police practice of imprisoning people who do not pray: “They send the police, and they say, well, if you don’t come for prayer, close your shop, we will arrest you But if you don’t, then we have to bring the punishment on you, you will be killed, and nobody will pray on you.”<6>

Abu Usamah saying that homosexuals should be killed by throwing them off a cliff, stating “throw off the mountain.”<6>
