some people are really sick. LAUGHING at a rape scene-- |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-16-10 04:09 PM by niyad
hit one of the local channels to check on the progress of our latest storm--there was a weather crawl on something called "the wendy williams show" (whoever the hell SHE is). She was interviewing anthony geary (luke spencer from "general hospital") about the rape scene all those years ago. I am sorry I kept it on, because I was horrified to hear that people were laughing about that scene.

2. People laugh inappropriately sometimes when they are nervous. |
|
It doesn't necessarily mean that they find rape funny.
On the other hand, there probably are a handful of people who find rape amusing.

3. I was a teenager when that scene aired. |

Cured me of soap operas forever. I couldn't believe how sick it was. I'd be horrified to hear people laughing about it too. What could they possibly find funny about it?

since I had to work for a living, but I sure heard about that and the aftermath when the characters turned into the biggest love story of all time.
No woman who has been raped by a date or husband ever wants to see him again, even if she's forced to by circumstance. Make it a casual acquaintance and all she wants to see of him is under six feet of soil.
The whole story line sounded nauseating.
Some people might have been laughing nervously at how preposterous it was, others might have been simply nervous. The rest are dirt.

10. I'd probably want to know a little more about the context |

Thirty years ago, when this story line was being played out on General Hospital, it ballooned into a pop culture sensation. The Luke and Laura story crept into the public consciousness in a way that soap operas practically never do. The storyline began with Luke's rape of Laura, which morphed over time into a love story for the soap opera ages, and the desperate battle for Luke to clear his name and the search for the Left-Handed Boy.
Were they actually laughing about the rape scene? Or about the unlikeliness of a soap opera story capturing the public imagination the way it did? Or about the absurdity that 30 years later, the story is still compelling enough that Anthony Geary (who at the time looked like the illegitimate offspring of Art Garfunkel and Beaker, the lab assistant from The Muppet Show) is still being interviewed about it?
