I have a friend who has "Sales" in her home....
... several times per year. Old stuff, junk, antiques, knicknacks... like that. She has great taste and knows her yuppy customer base.

She buys low and sells a little higher in a very upscale, trendy area.

This last sale, she decided to open one hour early for anyone willing to kick $5 toward a local food bank.

One guy pulled up and saw the sign and just blew up.... yelling about how everyone is catering to the lazy and stupid. Guy went on and on and made his wife get back in the car and leave.

Another guy said he would give the $5 bucks for any animal charity, but not the food bank.

Rhetorical question: WTFF is happening to people?

They get him and us both ways! He's the cause of unemployment... but the lazy Dems out of work are at fault.

Very Christian of them... all those fishes and loaves and such...

10. What should have Jesus charged?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 09:06 PM by AnArmyVeteran
According to right wingers Jesus was a left wing, bleeding heart liberal. I'm sure they believe Jesus was a sucker and a loser for not charging for each loaf or slice of bread and for every pound of fish he gave to the masses. And I'm sure they believe Jesus should have refused to heal anyone who was sick if they didn't have an insurance card. When we give to others without wanting or expecting anything in return that is the greatest gift of all. But conservatives believe helping the poor and healing the sick are evil.

Conservatives believe money should be attached to everything. They equate success with the amount of wealth a person has, and if a person is poor they are automatically labeled as deadbeats, lazy or drug addicts. Jesus never thought about people like that. In fact, the only times I remember him getting mad was at the money lenderers (big business of their day) and at hypocrites who flaunted their beliefs. Right wingers love big business and believe they are almost divine and blessed with special talents and abilities. And right wingers like to constantly tout their Christian beliefs even though the don't have a clue about Jesus' teachings (conservatives are the greatest hypocrites of our present days).

There are a lot of things in this world I feel uncertain about, but one thing I know for sure: Whatever direction right wing 'Christians' like Bush, Palin, Cheney, Robertson, Hannity and Beck go in the afterlife, I want to go in the opposite direction. Spending an eternity with them would be complete hell.

19. I love your explanation, very good.
We've run the town's food drive for the last 3 years with the cub scouts amounting to around 20,000 cans collected. Now there are some doors with (no scouts signs) on them.

Oh well.

3. It's my theory that they have to blame people....
Because if they admitted these things are happening to people who don't deserve it, that means it could happen to them, too -- and they still believe they're in control. Even though they're not.

4. Oh man, she must live in my town!
Seriously, folks here will do anything for the animal shelter, which is a no-kill shelter. Only in the last few years has the food bank gotten any kind of real assistance. Revenue for the shelter used to be over $100,000 a year while the food bank was less than $10,000. I haven't checked lately, but I do think a new manager has helped improve the situation.

5. earlybirds are fuckwits plain and simple
i know, generalizations are wrong & bad, but in my unpleasant experience "earlybirds" at yr home sale, estate sale, garage sale, etc. are DEALERS and the dealers in question are a creepy assortment of ex-cons, GOP thieves who want to buy low (for nothing) and sell high, and just plain the type of person who "he doesn't want to buy, he wants to steal"

i no longer allow earlybirds, but i have no problem w. charging the earlybird an extra five bucks -- just don't TELL the earlybird that the extra $5 will go to their homeless hustler buddy because they'll be fucking bitter (that's their attitude, they're a hustler, they only know other hustlers, and the homeless/needy they know are...altoghter now...HUSTLERS) so of course they have a bad attitude

some people around here now say, "early birds pay double," and i'm cool with that too

memorable yard sale -- i had some rare items and i knew from the price book the items sold for $60 ea. retail, i had them marked $12 apiece -- earlybird dealer comes and starts screaming at me about how high my prices are, like that's gonna make me cut her a break? "in that case, i will keep the items, i don't want to rip anyone off"

i later visited her booth, comparable items were priced for...wait for it...$60

i'm glad i didn't sell her fuck-all, i sold my stuff to people who were nice and who were willing to allow me to make a tiny profit because they're already knowing they're going to make a bigger profit

why do you have to fucking STEAL? i hate earlybirds, i'm not at all surprised by your friend's story

earlybirds are evil, next time, yes, charge them the extra five bucks just don't let 'em know where the money is going tee hee

7. I thnk it has to do with a syndrome. The "I think I can and will run
other's peoples lives".
Control, but control beyond their own pathetic lives.
Like Prop 8. Ok, so they don't like homosexuals, they don't approve of it, now they think they should pass a law to deny rights to them?
Similar to, if they don't want to feed the poor, then you cannot be allowed to feed the poor. Faulty logic or insanity, to say the least.
But all too common today. It used to be people that stupid knew enough to keep their mouth shut. Not any more.

26. It wouldn't make the slightest difference.
It's amazing how many people DON'T GET THE CONNECTION when they or their relatives or friends need help. Somehow "that's different, it's not our/their fault, they really need help," and they are not at all like "all those lazy stupid parasites sucking our blood"

I get so tired of living among idiots.

9. I know, some people are just ignorant
It's just about time to start our annual food drive here. All people have to do is put food in sacks by their mailbox and we have people come around and pick it up. When school starts, we have a room designated for donated clothing and linens. We'll have a drive for that and make sure all the kids have decent clothes for school. They can come in after hours (to avoid any embarassment) and take anything they want, free of charge. During the school year, we send some of the less fortunate kids home on Friday's with a backpack full of food. A lot of them get their nutrition from school lunches and not much else, so we make sure they have something to eat on the weekends. It's not much, but it means the difference between attending school or not for some of these kids, and as long as I am able, I'm helping out. Fortunately, I live in an affluent gated community where people are very generous.
Up to sixty percent of the kids at our school have needs, and if we can, we are seeing that some of those needs get met.

While our program was set up for school kids, a lot of adult clothing is also donated along with linens, so we are helping out those of all ages who are in need. And yeah, I'm damned proud of it!

11. Last year a local AM sports station was doing a remote and promoting the food bank
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 08:19 PM by Elwood P Dowd
in front of a supermarket. The store had several items on sale for the food bank promotion and even had the food bank people out front collecting donations. It was just before Christmas.

I'm out in the yard listening to this show while cleaning up leaves and stuff, when a neighbor comes by. He hears the hosts talking about donating to the food bank and flies off the handle about lazy people not working and wanting free food. Says he heard on Fox News that most of the unemployment was caused by all the handouts from the "govement" making people lazy, and there were plenty of jobs if these freeloaders would just get off their lazy ass and go look for them.

What's sad it that this guy is in church every Sunday. He has never held a job in his entire life. After spending a few years attending college to avoid the draft, he finally got a high lottery number in 1970 and dropped out of college. Then his grandfather died and left him a nice little inheritance with some rental properties, so all he has ever had to do was collect rent. He spends all day listening to the likes of Limbaugh, watching Fox News, or listening to sports talk. Oh, and he calls himself an "achiever". He picked that up from Limbaugh.

12. Faux Propaganda has struck again
They have been openly attacking the unemployed, food banks, charities and anything that helps fellow Americans.

The Rupert Murdochs of the world have indoctrinated these hateful people to the point of no return. They are selfish and ignorant. They are such fools that they don't even realize that they are being led around by nose by their corporate masters. Only when they fall off and become one of the unemployed and uninsured will they understand.

15. why do you assume all small sellers are thieves?
i'll be the first to admit, MOST are but MOST are GOP fascist klan or one generation away from klan members

i pay my taxes on earnings from sales i make from my home, as i'm guessing any honest person does

i admit...it's RARE to meet an honest person into buy and sell, because the field attracts cheats/hustlers/GOP fuckwits

but i won't assume that a DUers friend trying to raise money for homeless people to fucking eat is a tax cheat...why make that assumption?

SOME of us are honest

and YES i DO resent it when you ask me not to pay sales tax, i won't make myself a thief for some guy i met in the classifieds, on craigslist or...anywhere really, i'm not gonna make myself a thief over sales tax and our 9.25% sales tax is prob the highest in the nation

we're not all thieves, thanks

anyone who buys/sells from me is WELCOME to report it, i already have, i appreciate the "back up"

Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 09:08 PM by SoCalDem
There were people around here who ran a perpetual "garage sale", and they got busted..

For months, people were afraid to have garage sales

I do not know you or your tax status, nor do I care what you sell, when you sell it, or to whom.

I merely commented about how a "disgruntled/possibly embarrassed would-be-customer" might just make a phone call.

I did not realize that as a responder to the OP, "someone" would assume that I was aware of their outside activities, or that I would care enough to berate them for deeds unknown to me.

no one called you a thief..

all the permits and everything. Keep scrupulous records and doesn't cheat the state or Feds out of a dime.

That's part of what really pisses me off about this whole thing. She is exactly what the Repubs wish they could be, and she takes heat for doing a Christian thing.

Think little old lady with a coin purse and a giant ledger.

some of them are xtians into the prosperity jesus shit, even tho jesus was a homeless man who wandered abt being put up in people's houses but never mind abt that

a lot of them don't believe in any god other than $

like i say, i was involved in buy and sell, it's a pretty ugly crew for the most part, there are some WONDERFUL good people but there are LOT of hustlers

all of them might mouth xtian kant at their convenience but you're not into buy & sell/material goods because you're a xtian, most are NOT believers

the overwhelming majority are whatever they have to be to put the hustle across
