Has anyone ever applied for FEMA disaster money? |
|
I am wondering if anyone has ever applied for FEMA disaster assistance, and what the experience was like? Do you have any tips for others who might go through this process?
We experienced flooding in Iowa, and President Obama just declared my county a national disaster area. That means we are eligible for FEMA money for damaged property.
We got water in our basement, and lost carpeting, furniture and we're now tearing out dry wall-as the water seeped from the floor into the walls.
I just registered with FEMA today, and they're supposed to follow up with a phone call within two weeks.
I'm just wondering what to expect and if anyone has helpful hints or tips that anyone in general, should know about this process.
Thank you for any insight! :)

PAPERWORK... the more paperwork you have, such as deeds and all that, the better.
Also tings like electrical bill, and all that crap.
Documentation is your friend.
Their site should have more guidance... and at least you are doing this under a President who actually cares.
Oh and i forgot... take a break now and again... for your well being. Yes silly shit like going out and getting a cup of coffee is a good thing to do for your mind.

..the FEMA rep on the phone said that when FEMA visits--to have the deed to our home, a utility bill, the latest mortgage statement and a copy of our homeowner's insurance. I plan to have all of that.
I have NO idea whether or not we will get a dime.
I am taking pictures and keeping samples of the damaged carpet, pad and walls. I can't keep it all because it's stinky, but I've got some of it. All they have to do is look at our torn apart basement to see the damage!
Thanks for your response. :)

some things never change... no matter what country!
Oh and good luck on this... it can be overwhelming, and even if they seem cold... they truly want to help. People in the field, 99% of the time want to help.
