I need some encouragement... my in-laws turned against Obama...
My entire in-law family has turned against Obama after they voted for him in 2008.

Turns out, they believe all the right-wing rhetoric and fell for all that hate-mongering crap.

So I will go and engage in a good debate with them, either in groups, or one-by-one.

I will take time, but I will do my duty.

I just had a good talk with my wife, who fell for all that crap. She came back from a family gathering with all that s... in her head and it took me a good hour to get her to realize the junk they've all been spoon-fed since Obama took office.

The right is managing to turn Americans against Americans. They want a civil war, they really do.

It's insane, absolutely insane.

5. I don't need help
Believe me, they know me. I told my wife I was going to go and talk to them all, and I know she will call them tomorrow and their reaction will be "oh-ho..."

They know I know my stuff, that I bring up a lot of information and arguments.

I always get reactions like "Oh, I did not know that... really?"

My wife did not know that the Republicans opposed a law to provide care for the 9/11 first responders. Yet I ranted about it.

Eventually it's about who yells the loudest.

9. I get it now, the anti-Obama thing on DU
Because so many people here have refused to understand that our divisions are going to cost us.

We don't have to walk in lockstep but the Republicans know how to get it done: by remaining united behind their man.

We suck at leading the country, let's face it. We are unable to put our differences aside on the left and instead fight between us and here is the result.

We look like idiots.

17. I think the more we are splintered, either from within or externally, the more
I am trying to be conciliatory and accepting of all things democratic/liberal/progressive, so in a way, for me, it's been pretty illuminating.

I do hope that we can all come together and maybe, just maybe, get some goddam ponies in the process.

It's the nasty rhetoric from the right and also the fact that the economy is doing worse under him, which is not his fault, but they see it this way.

12. Well he hasnt done much about job creation.
I still think Bill Gross's idea to refinance all mortgages in good standing that are guaranteed by freddie and fannie is the winning idea we need.

Gross estimates we could free up to $60 billion to stimulate the economy and the federal government wouldnt pay a cent!

Damn this is such a no brainer.

8. Jobs, mosques, oil spill, etc...
Of course, Obama is really doing a bad job at communicating.

This is my biggest disappointment with the man.

This great campaigner did not realize that it would be a 4-year campaign. WOW. Just... wow!!!

But yeah:

"Obama is building a mosque at Ground Zero"
"Obama is responsilbe for the jobs that disappeared"
"Obama caused the oil spill"
"Obama ceased ALL oil drilling operations in the Gulf"
"Bush left a good economy, Obama ruined it"

Etc... etc... etc...

To which I will counter with:

"The Republicans opposed all job bills"
"The Republicans opposed punishing business shipping our jobs abroad"
"The Republicans opposed a bill providing care to the 9/11 first responders"
"The Republicans have been playing games, promising to vote on bills then not doing it"
"Fox News lies to you ALL THE TIME (with a good list of lies, like the 40 guests -note how it sounds like Ali Baba's 40 thieves)"

Etc... etc... etc...

Of course, about the mosque, two words: FIRST AMENDMENT.

It is going to be some work. But all that negativity regarding the economy and the bad shape of the nation is turning people against Obama and they are easier to manipulate.

18. On the oil drilling
You can also say that it was only 33 or so wells out of 3300. Tell them the Oil Companies still do not have a disaster response plan if another deep well blows.

14. While I am critical of Obama
for various reasons what the Reich Wing says about him are complete fabrications. I think one has to be pretty naive to buy into their insane claims.

16. How do you know they voted for President Obama?
Did you go into the voting booth with them?

Is it possible they might have lied to you to get you to drop the subject? Everyone likes to say they voted or are voting for the winner. Even if they didn't/don't.

Who did they vote for president the previous two elections?

Don

19. "Cheap Labor Conservatives"
I just read:
http://www.conceptualguerilla.com/?q=node%2F55 - and was impressed. Supposedly a 3 min. read, but it takes a little longer. O.K., so I don't really understand everything about politics, but this truly to me was understandable (for the most part). I would take some of his examples and apply it to specific happenings, and I believe you could 'talk them down'. JMO

20. One man is not capable of losing all our jobs, creating that kind of deficit in such a short time
Although I am not happy with Obama's choices, how can anyone think that he is responsible for this big mess?

How did Obama send all of our jobs overseas in such a short time?

Because with the lack of jobs, comes no taxes being paid, people on unemployment...that is a big part of what is going wrong with the economy and that can be traced back to NAFTA and Clinton. We need to unite around the real problems and solutions. The problem NAFTA, WTO etc...solution cancel them! We had tariffs for a reason. This problem was clearly not caused by Obama, but can be solved by him. Let's unite and demand Obama cancels NAFTA and the WTO and refuses and future "free" trade agreements.

The deficit? Although Obama hasn't exactly helped, how can thinking people forget about the last 8 years? Are Americans really that brainwashed? I am sure someone here has the chart about which presidents are really driving the deficit?

So they know who owns the media? They must realize that the media has an agenda?
