Poll question: Millions of children in immediate risk of disease and starvation
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-18/unicef-says-3-5-million-pakistan-children-at-risk-of-water-borne-diseases.html

“We urgently need to scale up the distribution of water. If we are not able to do so because of lack of funding, water- borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and dysentery will spread and begin killing affected populations, especially children, already weak and vulnerable to disease and malnutrition,” Mogwanja said.

1. Half an hour without even a single vote, never mind a comment.
Wow.

Too uncomfortable?

2. It's late. Things move slow here at night.
I think people do care. I also think that people are financially having a harder time. Haiti came at tax time. It is now the end of summer. For those with kids it means the extra expenses getting kids ready for another school year. For many people with children summer is far more expensive due to the children being home more of the day. Child care expenses go up, food costs go up...

Times are tough for a lot of people around the planet right now. It isn't always that people don't care.

3. We can donate...
to Oxfam, Save the Children Fund, Unicef, and others. In the UK, there is the Disasters Emergency Committee that co-ordinates efforts.

4. Not only has this been unrecommended (still at 0 after my rec), someone has voted for option #2!
:wtf:

BTW I'm always adding news stories and pics to my Journal: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Turborama

And this entry has links to Save the Children, Red Cross/Crescent & Doctors Without Borders' Pakistan Aid homepages: http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Turborama/172

Thank you for starting this poll, I'll help with the occasional kick later if needs be...

5. This reminds me of how the world ignored
the stories coming out of Germany in the '30s. Not 'brown people' then but we always have to have a scapegoat for the haters. I hope the world doesn't wait until it's too late for many people, as they did back then. I wonder what has happened to the world that said 'never again'. I always interpreted that to mean that the world would never again stand by while people were dying if they knew about it and could prevent it.

Kudos to the human rights organizations, like Doctors Without Borders who are blind to race and religion and politics. Bless them for their decication to doing what is right. I hope they get donations to help them in their work.

:kick: and rec'd but my rec did not show. Islamaphobia on a progressive board. Even against the little children? Sometimes I wonder if I stumbled onto the wrong board.

8. It's a tangled web. Those who call the whole country
the 'Taleban' are no doubt supporters of this country's 'War on Terror' which is fake. As the Wikileaks proved, the U.S. knew that U.S. money was going to the Taleban, probably even Al Queda. Poor fools falling for the propaganda. We will make peace with the Taleban and proably reinstall them in AFghanistan when we're ready to leave as they seem to be good at restoring order after the chaos rained upon their country by the Super Powers. And then we'll find another enemy, and the same fools will redirect their hatred on command.

This is one of those times in history. One which people are going to look back on and say to themselves, "If only we took that devastating situation in Pakistan seriously".

18. Yes, ten years of mindless lies and propaganda
has apparently had an effect on the American psyche. This is a pivotal moment where the decisions made could make the U.S. the most respected country in the world and a powerful force for a better world.

I have little hope that the U.S. will seize this moment. I hope someone else does.

stepped forward, although they are having their own problems with mudslides which tragically caused the deaths of over 1,000 people so far ...

I agree with everything else you said, too.

I thought everybody was worried about "civilian casualties".

Well, helloooooo!

There are MILLIONS of CIVILIAN CASUALTIES in Pakistan right NOW!
