1. That's hilarious
What's the story behind it?

Did it really get published in Hustler? Was it around the time of the Supreme Court decision?

Did Campari go along with it?

2. Yes it was in Hustler.
It was the reason Flynt was sued for libel.

I don't know if Campari okayed it.

"At the heart of the First Amendment is the recognition of the fundamental importance of the free flow of ideas and opinions on matters of public interest and concern. "he <485 U.S. 46, 51> freedom to speak one's mind is not only an aspect of individual liberty - and thus a good unto itself - but also is essential to the common quest for truth and the vitality of society as a whole."

5. Ah, thanks
Interesting to see that the majority of the SC agreed with Flynt.

INCLUDING Scalia.

6. If you've never seen People vs. Larry Flynt
Edited on Wed May-16-07 07:51 AM by pokerfan
it's worth watching if only for the scene late in the movie where Edward Norton as Flynt's attorney pleads his case before the Supremes. A lot of the dialog in that scene is supposedly taken directly from court transcripts.

There is even a point where the Scalia character questions Norton on a point and seems satisfied with the answer.

8. quote from the film
Jerry Falwell: What?
Roy Grutman: Yeah, Jerry, he's suing you.
Jerry Falwell: He's suing me? For heaven's sakes, on what grounds?
Roy Grutman: Well, you xeroxed his ad, and you sent it out in a million fundraiser letters.
Jerry Falwell: Yeah, so?
Roy Grutman: But you didn't get his permission. And that's copyright infringement.
Jerry Falwell: The depth of his depravity sickens me.
