"Since his wife was killed in the plane that went into the Pentagon, I don’t see how {Ted Olson's} opinion really matters all that much in relation to the mosque at Ground Zero"

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2573117/posts#1

Ted Olsen was the conservative lawyer arguing against Prop 8 earlier this year. He recently said that the mosque should be built near ground zero.

1. The right wing will eat their own if they do not tow the line
This is part of the reason they can get everyone following the talking points so well.

They are making an example of Ted Olson.

2. And why would the FR poster's opinion matter?
If Olson's opinion doesn't matter, why would some guy posting from mom's basement?

4. Olsen also said he might not like it but it should be built.
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 07:10 PM by dkf
This is hurting him. This is what we are asking the victims families to accept on top of their earlier loss. I'm glad his accepting more pain makes you all happy.

6. It's about recognizing that this mosque had NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11!!!!
They ARE NOT Al Qaeda! They did NOT attack us.

8. Did you see how he differentiated between the terrorists and those building the center?
You might want to try that. If Ted Olson, who lost his wife in the attack can make that distinction and be okay with the center, then maybe you can stop your Crusade.

10. Yet he doesn't like it.
Until there is no hurt or grief generated by this mosque it is inappropriate. That day will come, maybe when all have died themselves but it hasn't happened yet.

11. I don't know what world you live in
But life is about living and living can be painful. If we did everything around not generating grief or pain, we would never do anything. Your statement makes no sense at all in a rational and emotionally healthy world.

15. I will never leave my house again
until stepping outside causes me no hurt or grief.

Since I have a total moron living across the street, a nutcase next door who tried to run over my dogs in their own driveway, and a sore ankle, I guess I'm just never leaving my house again until I die. :hi:

17. We don't suspend our basic principles as a salve for emotional responses.
If it hurts them they are being religious bigots not so different than the terrorists.

There is no connection between this facility and that attack that is not based on hate and fear. There is no objection that does not violate a founding ideal.

Freedom doesn't always feel good nor do victims of horrible crimes get a vote on the rights of groups they associate with the culpable.

21. Wow. This is borderline psychotic.
News flash--THERE IS PAIN IN THIS WORLD. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DO THINGS YOU FIND OFFENSIVE.

Do I wish I could punch the guy who's running for Congress in my district and promising my neighbors he'll "repeal the health care bill" because he causes me a lot of pain and annoys the shit out of me? Hell yes I do.

But the same part of the Constitution that allows me to say that on an Internet forum also allows him to walk around spreading his crap, no matter how wrong I think he is. We don't get to abridge Constitutional rights for the sake of "sensitivity" or any other bullshit.

and Constitutional Rights. I too knew someone in the Pentagon that nearly lost their life. A good friend of mine nearly lost her sister that day. She was hit by a piece of ceiling when the plane crashed into the building and went into a coma. I held my friend in my arms when she screamed and cried and broke down in the middle of the call center floor I worked at because she had no idea if her sister would live or not. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I won't ever forget it. But it does not pain me to have Muslims open a community center where they can worship at. Religion comes in many forms. Not all Christians are fundies and wanted to murder innocents at Oklahoma City. Some of us who were directly effected that day (and in much greater ways then me) do not feel they are in pain. They grieved and got over it a long time ago. What is our precedent? No religious freedom in certain circumstances? Either we follow the Constitution or we don't. It was crapped on enough for 8 years.

20. You really don't fucking get it, do you?
They're not building a mosque over the ruins of GZ. It's two blocks away, and it's not even a fucking mosque. They have owned the land for years, and the cultural center they are planning to build is within zoning laws and perfectly legal to build. They have a Constitutionally-granted right to build it and every time someone like you carps about "sensitivity" you help the terrorists win.

Wanna know why? Because they've accomplished their goal. They've scared you and millions of others like you into supporting an abridgment of free expression and religion for the sake of "sensitivity."

12. Their position is completely, 100% emotional.
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 08:27 PM by Marr
I have a right-wing relative who regularly says liberal positions are based on emotion and conservative positions are based on logic-- but when I question him on any subject, it always turns out that my position is based on data and his is based on an emotional 'gut check', and an ability to ignore information that doesn't support his position.

19. See they only use the 9/11 victims to further their
right wing cause....they never cared about the victims. Considering 80 of the 9/11 victims were Muslim.

These people are nasty..
