A Bible verse for Jerry Falwell, for his followers, and for his faith.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

- MATTHEW 6:5,6

'Nuff said.

4. Hey Will .... nice pick ....
As a side note: Did they have synagogues in 1st century Jerusalem ???

Wasn't the Temple still intact ? .... Isnt the Synagogue an idea for exiles who wished to worship after the temple was destroyed in the 70 AD's?

That isnt necessarily for you, Will .... but for anyone in the know ....

BTW: Hey Will ... hope all is well ...

5. How about "What does the Lord require of you, but to do Justice, Love Mercy, and walk
Humbly with your God."

Just do it.

7. personally I think this is more appropriate-
It doesn't matter to me where or how anyone prays- prayer isn't about how a person lives.

Justice, mercy, humility- it is the walk, not the talk.

regardless of who the talkin is 'to'.

peace,
blu

9. Exactly.
And let me add: "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should have love for one another."

I've been preaching the lectionary. This commandment comes up a lot between Maundy Thursday and the Sundays of Easter.

17. Naw....
when we stand before God, we will not be able to use as an excuse that someone else's ideas, concepts, religion etc made us do anything... you made your own choice as did I....so easy to blame someone or something else.

19. not an 'excuse'
the blatant hypocrisy I saw even as a small child was enough reason to doubt it.

I'm not blaming anyone. I made a free-will choice not to believe in that particular religion. And I have looked closely at it's myriad versions. They have morphed into something more bad than good, and I am not inspired.

15. Jesus did not mean we were not to pray in public at all.

He meant we were not to act holier-than-thou or to make a show of praying publicly.

We didn't like Falwell because he acted holier-than-thou.

But if we claim to be better than Falwell or his followers, then WE are acting holier-than-thou.

now ya got it. "There is none rigtheous, no, not one." We ALL fall short of the living God. Falwell was human. Get over it.

Now, Bush on the other hand is an evil demon....

21. Matthew was on a hitting streak there, and I think it continued into the next chapter
Matthew 7

1. Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4. Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5. Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

(didn't Bush make reference to, and butcher, these passages a few years ago?)

23. Any relationship between Falwell and Christ was purely financial.
And, he milked it for every penny he could get out of the flock that he frightened with the gates of hell.

24. Matthew 25:31-46 True followers of Christ vs. False followers
25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth sheep from the goats:

25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

25:35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

25:37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed ? or thirsty, and gave drink?

25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took in? or naked, and clothed ?

25:39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done unto me.

25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

25:42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did not to one of the least of these, ye did not to me.

25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

26. yes!
this was the quote I was thinking of when I heard about JF's death.

And from the oldest monotheistic religion:

The Zoroastrian rules for living: Think good thoughts, say good words, do good deeds.

Ahura Mazda will find JF lacking...

25. Will, these guys are Old Testament religionists
They are much more into Leviticus than Matthew. The punitive God rather than the benevolent God. At least as it applies to persons other than themselves.
