Smug Fred Thompson Implies Michael Moore Belongs in "Mental Institution"
Edited on Tue May-15-07 11:39 PM by Matsubara
In response to a letter from Michael Moore challenging him over the recent Cuba "scandal"...

A Challenge from Michael Moore to Presidential Hopeful Fred Thompson

Dear Senator Thompson,

Given that it has been publicly reported in The Weekly Standard, a leading neo-conservative publication, that you support Fidel Castro and the Cuban regime by being a purveyor of fine Cuban exports despite the trade embargo, I was surprised to see your recent op ed in a more traditional conservative outlet, The National Review, regarding my trip to Cuba (I suspect you choose The National Review in an effort to pander to an outlet that had criticized you for your opposition to medical malpractice legislation).

(snip)

While I will leave it up to the conservatives to debate your hypocrisy and the Treasury Department to determine whether the 'box upon box of cigars' violates the trade embargo, I hereby challenge you to a health care debate.

The bulldog-faced sometime actor responded with this smug video insulting Moore as a "friend of Castro" and needing to be in a "mental institution"

I had kinda hope Thompson was a bit better than the typical repuke scum (remember Rove & Hughes in the hunting outfits on halloween?)

But he shows that he is one of them, dyed-in-the-wool.

And of course the only issue that really matters- health care, especially for our troops was not on his mind at all. Scoring a point against Moore comes first.

Asshat.

3. Certainly knows how to endear himself to the liberal majority,
doesn't he? His antics over the last couple of years have certainly diminished my appreciation of "Law & Order."

4. I didn't take it as implying Moore belongs in a mental institution...
I think Thompson's point is that in Cuba, dissenters (like Michael Moore) are viciously persecuted, and (according to Thompson) Moore is a hypocrite for supporting such a regime.

5. I think it implied both. But of course, Moore DOES NOT support the Castro regime.
The point of Sicko is that EVEN a backwards little dictatorship like Cuba provides its people healthcare, while the "richest country" and "Biggest economy" in the world doesn't, and the people that do have health insurance end up paying more than twice as much for worse care than people get in most other developed country.

Comparing the US's disastrous system to Cuba's does not imply support for Castro in any way, and I would challenge ANYONE to find a quote of Moore saying that Castro is a good leader.

7. I don't disagree with you re: Moore's intent
I also think that Thompson is rather obviously and poorly attempting to fend off a well-placed counter-attack by Moore. It appears he thought he could get away with a hit-and-run on Moore, and Moore sent him off his tail between his legs.
