and it is just as distasteful....I can't think of a single good thing to say abnout Falwell...and for me at least that is enough of a statement.

1. No, they would picket his family during the ceremony
And tell (scream at) them that he died because God was punishing America.

My boss had an up close and personal encounter with them at his soldier nephew's funeral (check out my Journal). 350 Patriot Guard Riders, agmented by fire and sanitation trucks, kept the Phelps slime away.

The Phelps people are lower than whale shit.

3. Lenny Bruce claimed that satire "is tragedy plus time". . .
and the question was never if the target deserved Bruce's bite, or if Bruce's criticism was valid, or even whether Bruce was funny -- he was always funny, his commentary inevitably on the mark, and no one suffered his withering rebukes who didn't deserve it. What was only in question was if enough time had passed. And that, retrospect shows with growing certainty, rested soley in the ear of the beholder. When does the observation Jackie Kennedy didn't help the Secret Serviceman aboard but was put back in the car cease to shock and pass instead into considered commentary?

"Now the conclusion I've formed," Bruce said on stage shortly after Dallas, "that conclusion was denied by Time magazine, which said she was going to get help. Now, I challenge them: To which checkpoint would she go? Where's her experience? 'Oh, yes, when he shot I knew and I went right off the car to get help, so could bring back the help.' No, I think that's bullshit.

"Now, why did the guy get the medal? Certainly not the last caption, that he's being helped aboard. That's bullshit.

"Why this is a dirty picture to me, and offensive, is because it sets up a lie, that she was going to get help, and that she was helping him aboard. Because when your daughters, if their husbands get shot, and they haul ass to save their asses, they'll feel shitty, and low, because they're not like that good Mrs. Kennedy who stayed there. And
fuck it, she didn't stay! That's a lie they keep telling people, to keep living up to bullshit that never did exist."

So the way I see it, those who viciously attack Mr Falwell do so from an honest appraisal of their beliefs, and with the certainty their beliefs are a valid expression of contemporary opinion. Those who see this as inappropriate do so, again, from an honest appraisal of their beliefs. In this case, however, on these boards, the belief may be that the negative expressions -- though accurate -- are inappropriate at the moment. Both views are valid. Where they differ is not in taste or beliefs of their appropriateness, but rather, in the poster's perception of what time it is.

4. fred has NEVER danced or urinated on anyone's grave.
And no one intends to actually do either to falwells last resting place, we all do it FIGURATIVELY, on a chat room forum, anonymously, academically.

All we are doing is expressing our distaste in a graphic way. Should we all be ashamed of ourselves and hang our heads? I don't think so.

9. Awwww, are your little feelings hurt?
I guess it wasn't distasteful when Falwell decided to blame 9/11 on the gays, liberals and ACLU. Or when he said Katrina was a punishment from God for all the gays in New Orleans.

I hope the man burns in hell. If that's too much for your fragile little mind to take, please feel free to leave. Spare me the "this brings us to their level" bullshit.

10. Himme a break,
My feelings are not the least bit hurt. I just think grave desecration is over the top. Otherwise Falwell has what he has coming.

12. Do you have difficulty with figurative language?
If and when Falwell is buried and someone REALLY desecrates his grave, THEN you get to act morally superior: and I suspect most people here would agree with you. The guy's not even in the ground yet, so clearly nobody has desecrated his grave.

13. Uh oh. Don't look!!

(I have zero sympathy for horrible people like Falwell who used to verbally terrorize gay people. Good riddance.)

14. Exactly, Cboy
We're allowed to have grim satisfaction and even gleeful relief that a man who used Christ's message of love to whip up hate is dead.

I don't desecrate graves, but I'm also not a hypocrite: I'm glad that evil monster (for that is INDEED WHAT HE WAS) no longer breathes the same air that I do,

15. I've no problem with enemies dancing on my grave
I'd take it as a tribute that I'd done something to seriously piss them off - hey, piss on it if you like, I'll be dead & past caring.

Pals can do it too if it makes them happy. I'd rather that than for them to be miserable at my passing.
