Edited on Wed May-16-07 05:10 AM by ourbluenation
Yolanda Denise King (born November 17, 1955; died May 15, 2007) is the first-born child and first daughter of Coretta Scott King and the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Her younger siblings are Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Rev. Bernice Albertine King.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, King is a human rights worker and actress. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. (the official national memorial to her father) and was founding Director of the King Center's Cultural Affairs Program. She serves on the Partnership Council of Habitat for Humanity, is a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a sponsor of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and holds a lifetime membership in the NAACP. King holds a B.A. degree with honors from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, a Masters degree in Theatre from New York University and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Marywood University. In 1978 she starred as Rosa Parks in the TV miniseries King, which was based on her father's life and released on DVD in 2005.

King died late Tuesday, May 15th 2007 in Santa Monica, Calif., at age 51.

On the morning of May 16, 2007, The King Center reported that Yolanda King had died at the age of 51 from an apparent heart attack. Her date of death was given as May 15, 2007.

2. That's sad. It should have been Bernice Albertine King instead.

King vs. King on gay marriage

It must make for some interesting conversations at the family reunion. It seems the children of slain civil rights icon Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. can’t stop talking about gay rights, on both sides of the issue.

In December, Rev. Bernice King, MLK Jr.’s youngest daughter, took a high profile role in Bishop Eddie Long’s “Re-Ignite the Legacy” march in Atlanta. The march, from King’s gravesite to Turner Field, called on African Americans to return to the political activism of King’s era, and made opposing gay marriage a key part of the agenda.

But this week, Equality California announced that King’s other daughter, Yolanda King, would participate in the statewide gay rights group’s Aug. 20 Equality Awards event in Los Angeles.

Yolanda will take a stand directly opposite of her younger sister, presenting an award to the California State Conference of the NAACP for that organization’s support of gay issues, including a bill to allow gay couples to marry in the state.

8. So some discrimination is OK?

I guess it's OK to discriminate as long as it's not about the color of your skin. Nice. :eyes:

10. Isn't it amazing that so many of the pro-gay people around Bernice King died so young?
I wonder if she had a hand in any of their deaths?

20. She enjoyed a
close friendship with Malcolm's daughter, Attallah Shabazz. Two wonderful ladies, who did their fathers proud.

22. Attalah and Yolanda formed a beautiful friendship
I heard.

One day I was in the drugstore on Wilshire Blvd.

An absolutely stunning young lady walked by and for a moment I didn't know who she was. She walked like a Queen.

Then it hit me, Attalah Shabazz.

Notice the short, crisp response from the White House in the article.

"Jim Crow is dead, but his sophisticated cousin James Crow, Esq., is very much alive,"

:applause:

Rest in peace Ms. King. .O8)
