Barry Goldwater on the late Falwell (1981)
In 1981, Goldwater assailed the founder of the Moral Majority, the Rev. Jerry Falwell. Responding to Falwell's statement that all good Christians should be concerned about the Supreme Court nomination of Arizonan Sandra Day O'Connor, he said, ''I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.''

2. Truer words were never spoken.

Gee, I wonder will any of the pundits mention this quote from Barry Goldwater today. Somehow, I doubt it.

But you can be sure that Jimmy Carter's quote about saying Falwell could go to hell will get all the airtime.

5. Barry Goldwater was a pinko social libertarian compared to this lot.
I remember when it used to be a hallmark for the right to be compared to Barry Goldwater. Now that can't run away from him fast enough.

4. Goldwater was probably the only conservative that I truly respected
He was way before his time when he ran for president, and he really communicated his message poorly.

Goldwater was an old school conservative. Very strong on civil liberties. Despised the New Right types like Jesse Helms. Was very much against bedroom politics. And he was very pro-environment, which I imagine comes from his Arizona origins. Though his main problem was being way too hawkish on defense issues. Today, he'd be considered a libertarian. Hell, some might even say liberal (and Goldwater even admitted that).

6. If Goldwater was still in the Senate, impeachment would be underway.
