Assessing the damage from DU Falwell Fest |
|
Edited on Wed May-16-07 08:36 AM by Bragi
I noted much rending of garments here yesterday about how our recent celebratory musings about the passing of serial hater Jerry Falwell is offending the nation, and might possibly derail the 2008 election hopes of the Democratic Party.
However, a sober, morning-after search of google news for the last day reveals that only two obscure right-wing blogs have actually joined in the apparent non-avalanche of denunciations of DU'ers for our general glee at the demise of one of God's carefully-chosen fuckfaces-in-chief.
Now, I have seen reference here to "fair and balanced" commentator Sean Hannity apparently dissing DU, which I am sure is of concern to us all.
But alas, I can find no actual reference to our transgressions by any real media outlet.
So, can we have a morning-after tally of the damage so far? Other than the above sources, where exactly has DU been dissed in the MSM for celebrating the welcome removal of Jerry Falwell from our midst?
(Note: In your searches, please do not confuse Jerry Falwell with Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, who is fine and well, and whose demise would, I'm sure, be greeted with sadness by everyone at DU.)

4. Re: Gerri Halliwell; search the archives for "Laura Branigan." |

Not a pretty picture.
Concluding that note: well played, Bragi. I think the worst comments I saw concerning Rev. Jerry were that he probably had a surprise upon reaching St. Peter's desk. Quite mild, if you ask me.

5. Anybody who would not share in some relief at a world without Falwell |
|
would never have voted DEM or supported any liberal ideals to begin with. We lose nothing but a bit of dignity by letting off some steam over a man who has villainized almost any Liberal in one tirade or another.
That he went quickly, and without long suffering, was grace & blessing enough to show there is mercy working randomly in the cosmos. ;)

7. Never ask for empirical proof of a claim on DU! |
|
That would make you an elitist, who doesn't "respect" the "opinions" of others! No, people would rather wax indignantly about all the harm that will inevitably come.
Great post!

but who we are and our own hypocrisy. as we critize the right for exactly this behavior yet make all kinds of excuses for us doing exactly the same thing. not a whole lot about losing 2008 that i saw. it is easy to argue a point when you make up what the arument is about.

My reply is YES we're fucking angry. We are angry that YOU have totally screwed up this country with everything from your endless lies to your useless wars .. and yes your hatemongering snakeoilselling pseudochristian neofascist DEAD TV preachers.

11. I've found the whole thing fascinating, if irritating.. |
|
After the 10,000 scolding thread, what more is there to say? Yet they keep posting... Did I miss it? Was there absolution promised if one can point out the less than perfect among us and the "evil" of their ways (while ignoring our own)? I guess I missed that in childhood Sunday school.
It doesn't feel right to me to celebrate, but I'm not about to suggest we have reason to "mourn" this man's passing. His hypocrisy did tremendous damage and harm to a lot of people. But, those who wish to express their highly charged emotions more directly--so be it. I don't pretend to be "holier than thou" and nor do I think I get "credit points" for scolding them on their understandable response. Again, I must have missed that point in "Sundee school"

i think the very people you are accusing of being holier than thou, sundee school lesson, get credit points for scolding.... are merely saying exactly what you are saying. so not only do you pretty much say it word for word, but also scold us at the same time.
really interesting post in the scheme of things,... not to argue, scold or lecture in a sundee school holier than thou, just saw the ironic

I've not started a single one of the thousands of threads meant to impose my views on those who feel strongly and perhaps celebratory towards Falwell's demise (and to highlight my supposed 'sanctimony') on others. That is the difference, seabeyond.

23. nor have i. so i guess i get to not be sanctimonious too. |
|
but i would take it further. be it those that feel strongly about pissing on graves and in glee of the death and those that dont feel that is appropriate or civilized behavior, both have the right to start said threads and i really dont have a place to condemn either as sanctimoniouws or undeserving of starting the thread.

12. What was the meaning of the Ginger Spice name anyway? |
|
Now I can see how the others make sense. Scary, Posh, Baby, Sporty. These names we're based on each woman's personality. But Ginger Spice makes no sense. Can ginger be a personality? IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL, DAMMIT!
No, really, I was complaining to my wife about this last week. :P
Back on topic: Screw that hateful man. Considering the shambles the conservative right is in at the moment, perhaps Falwell's passing symbolizes and ending to this party ever holding dominant power ever again.

That's comforting to know.
I was beginning to fear that we may have spent all that quality time offending the nation, but that no-one heard us (see "tree falling in forest syndrome").

Do you think the right-wingers REALLY want people showing up to read DU and actually have their eyes opened?
"Hey, Hannity says DU is celebratin' Falwell's death... let's check it out... hey... Falwell said THAT? Falwell did THAT? He Whaaa?? Hey, what's this about Guilliani donating money to an abortion group? Jeff Gannon who... whaaa?"

Yeah I would like those that are concerned about 'perception management' to put up something tangible, less some start to think that the good people are simply Reagan era conservatives that think Ole Jerry had a 'few' good ideas...or perhaps the victim of a liberal media who twisted his words and he's not that bad of a guy.

26. If you had listened to Falwell you would know that |
|
we should rejoice in his death, as he is on his way to meet his Lord. Meeting your Lord is a joyous occasion, every single preacher I have ever heard has said this. What his Lord will say to him, probably wouldn't be polite in mixed company, but then you reap what you have sown.
A minister called up Randi yesterday and said it was alright to speak ill of Falwell, as it was the truth. We never advocated killing him, or even wished he were dead. The worst thing you can say is that we wished he would shut up and go away. Which now he has, so now we try to repair the harm that he has done.
