Clinton, Obama back Iraq fund cutoff
Sens. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) and Hillary Rodham Clinton separately declared their support Tuesday for a March 31, 2008 cutoff in funds for the Iraq war, two Democratic presidential front-runners abruptly shifting positions on the issue at the heart of the 2008 race. The twin announcements came on the eve of a largely symbolic Senate vote, and as Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd, said in a campaign commercial it was unfortunate that his White House rivals "will not join me" in supporting legislation setting the cutoff date.

Car bomb kills at least 32 in Iraq
BAGHDAD - A parked car bomb exploded near a market in a Shiite enclave northeast of the capital, killing at least 32 people and wounding 50, police said Wednesday. Hospital officials and some of the wounded said it appeared that chlorine gas was used in the attack, but police denied the reports.

Iran not complying with U.N. demands
VIENNA, Austria - Iran persists in its brazen defiance of U.N. Security Council demands that it halt uranium enrichment, the chief U.S. nuclear envoy warned Tuesday ahead of a fresh assessment that could lead to tougher sanctions against Tehran.

The Nation

Representative Tom Davis, a veteran Republican campaign strategist, sees one bright spot for his party's prospects in 2008: President George W. Bush's term will be drawing to a close.

WASHINGTON, May 15 — A senior lobbyist at the National Association of Manufacturers nominated by President Bush to lead the Consumer Product Safety Commission will receive a $150,000 departing payment from the association when he takes his new government job, which involves enforcing consumer laws against members of the association.

News From Nevada: No Voter Fraud But USA Fired Anyway
The search for a reason, any reason for U.S. Attorney for Nevada Daniel Bogden's firing continues. On Monday, The Washington Post reported that a Justice Department official had raised concerns about Bogden's performance on voter fraud. Maybe that was why he was canned? Well, if so, it wasn't because Nevada Republicans were up in arms about it, reports The Las Vegas Sun. Despite the fact that Karl Rove had "made sure to mention it to state officials during a campaign swing through Las Vegas just months before the contested 2004 election," the Sun reports, there seem to have been no complaints at all.

DHS report: Shirlington Limo Should Not Have Gotten Contract
A Washington transportation company that was questioned in the Randy “Duke” Cunningham investigation should not have been awarded its contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the department’s internal watchdog said. In a report obtained by The Hill, the department’s inspector general says Shirlington Limousine and Transportation Inc. was not qualified to receive the contract and instead was given an unfair advantage over its competitors by DHS officials. DHS’s procurement office, the report says, “awarded the contract to a non-responsible contractor. “

Television evangelist Falwell dies at 73
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell was stricken at his campus office and died Tuesday after a career in which the evangelist used the power of television to transform the religious right into a mighty force in American politics. He was 73.
Now explaining these words to his maker: “Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions”; “Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America”; “Textbooks are Soviet propaganda”; “The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews.”; “(Homosexuals are) brute beasts... part of a vile and satanic system (that) will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.”; “I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America... I point (the 9/11 attacks) in their face and say you helped this happen."” Liberal Talk Radio has more.—Caro

Wash. Post still blind to liberal blogger successes
The (U.S. Attorney) purge story illustrates yet another chapter in the growth of the blogosphere, and specifically the emergence of the liberal bloggers -- or netroots -- as an influential news source. Yet despite the significance of the story, and its larger media and political implication, it's telling that The Washington Post has shied away from highlighting (Josh) Marshall's work on unearthing the scandal. To this day, despite the fact the purge story continues to gain momentum week after week as more incriminating facts tumble out, and despite the fact that Marshall's work has been lauded by the Los Angeles Times and on National Public Radio, among others, the Post, with its aggressive, expansive media coverage, has not found the time or space to feature Marshall and his team of reporter/bloggers and to spotlight the extraordinary work they've produced.

Blogola Blends Bling, Blandishment for Blast of Blogger Blab.
Apparently, "TV studios and networks are trying to tap into the burgeoning power of blogs as promotional tools by flooding bloggers with free stuff in hopes the flattered recipients will reward them with positive coverage." How do we know this? Because the Wall Street Journal succeeded in tapping into the burgeoning power of Eat The Press to draw readers to their article on the matter by flooding our inbox with notices in the hopes that we would be flattered by the attention and reward them with a posting about their article! Ha-cha! The system works!

Student says watching network news is something parents do
"I can't imagine my friends sitting down to watch an actual network newscast at 6:30 because we're doing other things at that time," says University of Pennsylvania senior Jen Jablow. "It's a lot quicker to go online. I customize my news." Temple U. journalism major Karen Shuey says: "My generation will never go back to traditional news sources. TV news will eventually die out."

If cable-TV comic Jon Stewart anchored a Big 3 evening newscast, young adults might actually watch it.

CBS News Consultant O'Hanlon Wants To See Batiste Back On CBS
Okay, guess who wants to see retired General John Batiste -- who was fired by CBS as a news consultant for bashing Bush and the war in that VoteVets ad -- put back on air by the network? Another of CBS' own most high-profile news consultants: Michael O'Hanlon. This, despite the fact that O'Hanlon also happens to be a proponent of the surge. I just spoke to O'Hanlon, and he told me that he wants to see Batiste back on CBS because he views him as a "legitimate actor in the debate."

CNN allowed Beck to decry "leftist witch hunt" against shock radio, didn't mention his own hate speech
CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck appeared on the May 14 edition of CNN's American Morning to discuss the dismissal of radio host Don Imus and New York shock jocks JV and Elvis and claimed that there is a "leftist witch hunt" against shock jocks. But in discussing the issue with Beck, host Kiran Chetry introduced Beck simply as a "syndicated talk show host," and not as the host of a nightly program on CNN Headline News. Chetry also ignored Beck's own history of inflammatory remarks.

More Nations Crave Independent Satellite Navigation Systems
SUMMERLAND KEY, Fla. -- Europe is not the only focus of efforts to build a rival to GPS, the U.S. constellation of navigation satellites. U.S. control of the world's only fully functional satellite navigation system is fueling efforts by China, Japan and India to develop alternatives to GPS for regional coverage, and in China's case as a stepping stone to a global system, U.S. satellite navigation experts said.

Farfetched? Hint of Free Will Found in a Fly
A spark of free will may exist in even the tiny brain of the humble fruit fly, new findings that could shed light on the nature and evolution of free will in humans. Better understanding aspects of free will in humans could also help treat mental disorders where people face problems controlling how they feel, think or act, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder , anorexia nervosa, schizophrenia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Cities in 38 states and two territories will split $71 million in federal funds for cleaning up blighted and polluted areas, Environmental Protection Agency officials announced. Five tribal nations also will share the money, which is meant to revitalize neighborhoods damaged by pollution, contaminated by oil, scarred by mining and blighted by the sale of illegal drugs.
