Why is Mike Huckabee getting away with his "beauty shop" line?
It's the exact same sentiment as Ann Coulter's fag "joke", just redressed and given by a Baptist minister on national television.

Compare the two here:

2. Doesn't matter.
It came from a Presidential contender in a national debate on national television.

3. Because nobody gives a shit about Mike Huckabee...
Edited on Wed May-16-07 09:57 AM by youthere
in fact..that comment was probably his most notable moment. Granted, it was a pretty petty comment to make...but if I had to guess why there isn't a big stink about it, that would be why.

4. Then how about the reaction of the crowd?
They ate it up.

That isn't representative of how they feel as a group?
That isn't worth bringing to light?

5. So did the crowd when Ann Coulter made her comment...
It's not like those folks are considering voting for Edwards anyway, so their reaction to a petty stupid comment like that isn't exactly a surprise. Were you actually shocked when the republican crowd, at a republican debate laughed at a joke made at the expense of a democrat?

7. It's not just at the expense of John Edwards
It's at the expense of gay people, too - and that needs to be known.

9. I don't get how Huckabee's remark was a jab at the expense of gay people...
I thought it was a jab at Edwards $400 haircuts.

20. Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize a beauty shop was only for gay people.
I was under the illusion that women go to beauty shops. I was under the illusion that they've called Edwards a "Breck Girl" for years for having the footage leak of him getting make-up put on before a TV interview.

25. Wow.
I did not say anything about a beauty shop not being for women.

I'm talking about Mike Huckabee's inference that Edwards is a gay man.

However you can keep looking for things to offend you, you're free to do that.

17. "Beauty shop" is the "exact same thing" as "fag"?
I am not sure that this is the right place to be doing this kind of stereotyping. I have gay friends who get $20 haircuts at old-fashioned barber shops.

29. Where is the gay slur? "beauty shop" isn't code for a gay slur to anyone but you.
The point that I proved is that to say barber shop, woudln't have made much sense because a haircut at a barber shop would never cost $400.

A haircut at a salon or beauty shop would.

13. Ann Coulter used a homophobic slur
Mike Huckabee merely joked about John Edwards spending $400 on a haircut. I didn't see any homophobia there.

15. Puh-leeze...it was a funny line.
He delivered it well, didn't dwell on it. It wasn't offensive in the way Coulter's remarks are. Like it or not, Edwards earned his rep as being a pretty-boy. The joke was right on target.

Edited on Wed May-16-07 10:20 AM by Bronyraurus
That should be pretty clear. In fact, the joke is not a slur against gays, it's a poke at Edwards' prettiness, his expensive haircut, and an oblique reference to the video that everyone's seen of him primping and preening in front of a mirror.
