Combat brigades in Iraq under different name
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/08/dn-brigades-stay-under-different-name-081910/

So while the “last full U.S. combat brigade” have left Iraq, just under 50,000 soldiers from specially trained heavy, infantry and Stryker brigades will stay, as well as two combat aviation brigades.

snip

The Army has three different standard brigade combat teams: infantry, Stryker and heavy. To build an Advise and Assist Brigade, the Army selects one of these three and puts it through special training before deploying.

The Army selected brigade combat teams as the unit upon which to build advisory brigades partly because they would be able to retain their inherent capability to conduct offensive and defensive operations, according to the Army’s security force assistance field manual, which came out in May 2009. This way, the brigade can shift the bulk of its operational focus from security force assistance to combat operations if necessary.

To prepare for their mission in Iraq, heavy, infantry and Stryker brigades receive specialized training that can include city management courses, civil affairs training and border patrol classes.

story not found on that page

edited again to add:
google has the cached page. "Aug 23, 2010 13:26:30 GMT"
( I used tinyurl because cached addresses are so long)
http://tinyurl.com/26x5zx7

so, why did they pull the page?

The cached page shows something rather intriguing,:

Some combat brigades left Iraq, with much publicity, as we know.
but other combat brigades remained.

"There are seven Advise and Assist Brigades in Iraq, as well as two additional National Guard infantry brigades “for security,” said Army spokesman Lt. Col. Craig Ratcliff."

the ones remaining, altho supposedly in an "advisory" capacity, were specially trained in the US:.

"brigades receive specialized training that can include city management courses, civil affairs training and border patrol classes."

Hmmmmmm.......they are being used to "run" Iraq?
To prop up Karzai?
to maintain the partitioning of Iraq cities?
to practice urban warfare ?

would be interesting to know.

5. What is their mission?
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 09:19 AM by Ozymanithrax
You can send units of a combat brigade to serve as a police, fight a fire, help flood victims, guard an embassy, train or advise allied troops, or march in a Parade. Those missions are not combat. Are the units in Iraq now sent there to hunt down and subdue enemy forces? Troops stationed in Germany are no longer fighting the third Reich.

I would prefer to see all U.S. forces withdrawn, even those not serving in active combat missions.

8. Umm.. no
Most of the personnel left are grunts, and are training Iraqi grunts. They're not out patrolling.

9. Is anyone believing this "no combat troops" propoganda?
Last full combat brigade? What does that even mean?
